RESULT:
Michael Mixed A 12 – 5 Rushen Mixed B
The second men’s opening match was the closest of the night and could easily have gone either way. Juniors Charlie Kneale and Kylan Murphy pushed an experienced Rushen pairing hard, narrowly losing the first game 22–24. That narrow defeat gave Rushen the momentum to take the second 14–21.
The second ladies’ match was far more straightforward, with Jo Moore returning to the side alongside Lorna Kennaugh to claim a confident 21–12, 21–10 victory.
We’ve seen significant improvement from our players competing across the open, ladies’ and mixed leagues this season, highlighting the importance of regular competitive badminton.
The first men’s match was the only one to go to three. Jamie Everitt and Ryan Brew were slow to settle, losing the first 18–21, but found their rhythm midway through the second and battled back to take the next two 21–15, 21–15.
In the first ladies’ match, Carolyn Brown and Leanne Brew continued their perfect record, easing to 21–11, 21–8.
At the tea-and-biscuit break, Michael led 6–3.
In the fourth mixed, Lorna Kennaugh and Kylan Murphy, who have both benefitted from playing open and ladies’ league are still finding their feet in mixed. They worked hard but were beaten 10–21, 16–21 by a strong Rushen pair.
The third mixed saw Jo Moore and Charlie Kneale look like a long-established partnership, taking both games comfortably 21–11, 21–13.
The second mixed pairing of Carolyn Brown and Jamie Everitt started slowly but fought back to win the opening game before carrying their momentum into the second, rounding out a 21–18, 21–10 win.
In the final match of the night, first mixed pairing Leanne Brew and Ryan Brew, fuelled by their positive mental attitudes, dispatched their opponents 21–13, 21–7 to close out the fixture.
A big thank-you to Rushen for travelling to Kirk Michael after some of the worst weather in recent weeks, at least this fixture is out of the way before winter. Rarely do we say we didn’t need the heating on!
