Kippford RNLI

Kippford RNLI RNLI Kippford operates a D-Class Inshore Lifeboat from the small coastal village of Kippford in Dumf This was operational only during the summer months.

1966
An inshore lifeboat (ILB) station was established at Kippford in May with a D class lifeboat. The ILB was kept in a small boathouse at the top of a narrow lane leading down to the beach.

1977
A replacement boathouse was built by the lifeboat crew.

1999
The station became operational all year round.

2000
The D class lifeboat, D-553 David Whitehead, was placed on service on 6 July.

2005
HRH

The Duke of Kent, President of the RNLI, was given a tour of Kippford lifeboat station on 18 July, meeting volunteer crew members and fundraisers.

2010
The new station D Class lifeboat D-718 Catherine was placed on service on 12 November. D553 has been withdrawn. The lifeboat was funded by a generous bequest. The naming ceremony for this lifeboat was held on 17 April.

oops - a clash of dates! but why not make it a lifeboat themed weekend with the Kippford RNLI Open day on Saturday 1st August and the boatshed Bricks lifeboat themed Lego display just 30 minutes along the coast in the trail (St Andrews Church Hall, Kirkcudbright) on Sunday 2nd. Or even get to Boatshed bricks at 10am on the Saturday and nip along to Kippford afterwards - What a great day out!

Boatshed Bricks uses donations of preloved Lego bricks to build entertaining and educational models for exhibitions to raise funds for lifesaving activities on Scotland's shores.

This week we welcomed the Dalbeattie Beaver group to the lifeboat station as they work towards their safety badges.

Our volunteer crew talked to the children about the work of the RNLI and showed them our lifeboat, tractor and kit.

It was lovely to see such enthusiasm from the entire group as they learned about water safety including how to float, not to go into the water to help someone and how to call 999 to ask for help.

Finally they were able to watch the lifeboat launch for a training exercise before the visit finished.

We're looking for shop volunteers here in Kippford. We would particularly like to hear from you if you have free time on a Tuesday or Wednesday however all applications are welcome as we try to have shop availability throughout the summer months.

Practice session for our trainee launch vehicle drivers in the sunshine last night.
Driving the tractor and trailer requires skill and situational awareness. The launch vehicle driver also needs to know what to do in the event of an emergency and coordinate with the lifeboat crew for launch and recovery.
All these skills are assessed by an RNLI trainer before individuals are approved to operate the launch vehicle in live situations.

In 2025, RNLI lifeboat crews helped 8,290 people and saved 272 lives, making it the sixth-busiest year in the charity's history.

That trend is reflected in the statistics here at Kippford with 9 launches last year including 3 in the hours of darkness. Once again we are putting out our own 'Mayday' call, asking you to get involved in our biggest national fundraising event, The Mayday Mile, to help fund our vital lifesaving service.

Participants are challenged to cover a mile a day for the month of May, with every penny raised helping to make sure that we have everything we need to keep people safe this summer and beyond.
