Lewis The Therapy Dog
Hospital can be a scary place for anyone let alone a child, fortunately for the Acorn Ward at Hull Royal Infirmary they have a little fury friend to make any visit that little bit less stressful and he goes by the name of, Lewis 💙🐾💙🐾
Lewis and his handler David volunteer their time once a week (some times twice) spending whatever time is needed to see every child on site; as part of their visits Lewis entertains his patients with a range of tricks, plays hide the ball, lets the children read to him and for those that are mobile even lets them take him for a walk around the ward with a special lead however this is just the tip of the iceberg of his abilities and is often called upon by the professionals to assist in their care.
Lewis has on many occasions been asked to act as a physical distraction for children having bloods taken or cannulas put in or taken out, used as encouragement to get children out of bed and back in their feet after operations and assisted in any long term physiotherapy needs.
Lewis is also used to show his patients that not all pieces of equipment used by the doctors and nurses will hurt; as shown in the pictures he regularly uses his own Stethoscope letting children listen to his heartbeat, has a small pen torch so children can examine inside his mouth and even has a blood pressure monitor which they can attach to his leg, he really is having a positive impact on those he meets and makes what is a stressful time just that little bit more bearable.
