Could you support new parents with breastfeeding as a QEH volunteer?

Three infant feeding peer support volunteers – all mothers with personal experience of breastfeeding – will now be available on the maternity ward to help with promoting and sustaining breastfeeding among new parents.

This dedicated support has been given evidence-based information to support mothers in the early days of feeding their babies offered through the Association of Breastfeeding Mothers (ABM). They will provide invaluable support to mothers, giving advice and a listening ear in the early days of breastfeeding.

More volunteers are needed. If you are passionate about breastfeeding and would like to support new parents, you can train as a breastfeeding peer support volunteer with Team QEH Maternity by emailing [email protected] to express your interest.

🤩Maternity Team Celebrates World Book Day by Giving Every Newborn a Book📖

To celebrate World Book Day, the maternity team today will gift every baby born a special book, helping to mark the occasion by encouraging families to begin reading with their children from the very first days of life.

Reading to newborns offers a range of important developmental benefits. Even in the earliest stages of life, babies respond to the sound and rhythm of a parent or caregiver’s voice. Sharing books helps to strengthen the emotional bond between baby and parent, supports early language development, and stimulates brain growth.

Introducing books from birth also helps babies become familiar with sounds, words and patterns of speech, laying the foundations for communication and literacy skills as they grow. Just a few minutes of reading each day can support cognitive development, improve listening skills, and create calming routines for both baby and parent.

The maternity team hopes that by gifting a book to every newborn on World Book Day, families will feel inspired to make reading a part of their daily routine from the very beginning.

Thank you to local company Booklife Publishing for helping us to make this possible with their generous donation of books.
