Its that time of year when we like to get all the firewood out and ready for the season. And boy are the orders rolling in this week. Stocks cant last forever so please order soon.

As usual we've had a few customers that are new to burning wood ask if we would share with them a few hints and tips to show how we do it in the Sitka Household.

So to you guys, here are just a few basics to get the best out of your firewood.

- Only burn seasoned wood! Burning unseasoned wood is inefficient and can be damaging to your stove and chimney by leaving a layer of creosote which can lead to chimney fires! Not cool.

- Bring your logs indoors! Not cos they get lonely but it gently warms them meaning they catch a little easier (ignite) and again making the fire nice and efficient. Here we bring them in for the next day when possible.

- Burn logically. Burn small logs and softwood first and work your way up to big logs and your hardwoods. If it gets too hot ease it up with softwood again. A mix of different woods is key also.

- Know what you're burning. Learning the woods you burn will allow you to understand how they are likely to burn : Fast & Hot or Slow & Low

- Buy good quality wood from people who source it locally and care about what they produce. DON'T import your firewood from abroad that is shocking!!

- Don't forget your kindling! An essential stage of lighting a fire, it creates a bed of hot embers to lay those logs in. Also, it gets your stove up to temperature fast! If the kindling is good a single small fire lighter is all that's needed.

Its that time. We have one windy day and you all get the wooly hats on and start thinking about Autumn - I like it!!

Well it's been quite a year for our firewood this year with all the harvested timber from storm damage so our stock is looking good but as always there is a limit to space and capacity.

We want to thank all our customers for the continued support and getting orders in early thats a real help.

Dont believe the stories- firewood does not actually grow on trees. Its hard earned by the team here at SITKA so we're fiercely proud of the product we produce.

For those that don't know, here's a couple of facts about our humble logs :

• It's locally sourced! So no carbon miles from being imported and shipped round the country. Yes! Alot of firewood is imported. Shocking I know....

• We naturally season our wood. No Kilns burning wood to heat wood! Let nature do its job. Be patient!

• Every log is cut and split by the team in true cottage industry fashion, using low impact machinery

Yes we even still use axes when we're in the mood.

We have our usual firewood crates available on the webshop but also introducong our new Barrow Bags. A real game changer to help time with orders of loads of wee bags.

The crew out sorting storm damage over a couple of estates we help manage today after the festive period.

As I share this cracking picture of our Barny, I want to take the time so say a huge thanks to both customers and staff for yet another incredible year.

What a difference from the weekend here in Kilsyth!

Cracking big crown lifts on these old Limes at Kilsyth Anderson Church right in the middle of our own town.

We've been maintaining these trees for a wee while. Trying to correct some previous poor quality works and keeping a careful balance between scale of tree, adjacent structures and the neighbours.

We're happy with the out come from the last few days! 👌

These trees have a Tree Preservation Order so all works have been put through planning.

When this mature Maple failed a few weeks back we knew straight away it was so badly damaged it would need to be removed.

The failed limbs had left the tree structurally unsound and no longer suitable to climb or fell.

World Bee Day shines a light on the habitat of pollinators to improve the conditions for their survival so that bees and other pollinators may thrive.

The date was chosen as it was the day Anton Janša, a pioneer of modern apiculture, was born. Janša came from a family of beekeepers in Slovenia, where beekeeping is an important agricultural activity with a long-standing tradition.

Saving the bees one tree at a time 🌳🐝

Brought in today by North Lanarkshire Council to help save a colony of wild bees that had taken up residence in previously installed bat box.

Unfortunately, the tree was in such a poor state that the bees and bat box needed to be relocated before the removal of the tree. So Nick kitted out in his bee suit and armed with the cherry picker got set to work safely removing them and gently transporting them back to SITKA HQ.

We want to give credit to the council for allowing us to rehome these bees.

This looks an interesting course available via the council. Orchard management is a bit of a lost art. So it's great to see it on the up.
