MENmatter represent a new age whereby men can feel comfortable to express their feelings and experiences in the absence of any stigma. Outdated stereotypes still exist within society despite a recent upturn in men within the public eye talking openly about their own mental health challenges.
‘Men are supposed to be the hunter-gatherer type in dominating positions of power and should not show signs of weakness’
These individuals who are slowly starting to open up about their emotions should not be considered the ‘weak ones’ but instead should be respected as the ones that are brave and are ‘manning up’. MENmatter intend to develop a support network to encourage more individuals to share their emotions and experiences. A safe environment for those suffering in silence who do not know where to turn. We collectively believe that help is available to everyone should they be willing to face up to their illness and take comfort in the fact that they are never alone.
We are a group of individuals who have all experienced or been exposed to mental health difficulties in recent times and have seen the benefits of opening up. It is because of our own experiences that we intend to be as transparent as possible from the start. We are all at a stage whereby we are happy to share our personal stories in the hope that others can relate and take comfort in a personal environment. We are not a counselling service instead we anticipate acting as a first step to an individual’s self discovery and recovery. We have established many relationships with other charities and services who we can call upon or refer individuals to should they feel it necessary.
