Protecting our local biodiversity starts right here in Kendal!

Did you know that while Himalayan Balsam looks pretty with its pink flowers, it’s actually an invasive non-native species? It quickly takes over our riverbanks, pushes out native wildflowers, and reduces the biodiversity our local wildlife relies on.

Thanks to dedicated volunteers working with The Clean The River Kent Campaign and the South Cumbria Rivers Trust, a massive dent has already been made in the Kent catchment, but the fight isn't over!

Want to do your bit for nature right on your doorstep? No specialist skills needed, just a pair of hands and a willingness to help our local environment thrive.

👇 Find out more about how you can get involved and join an upcoming work party:

Following a wonderful Saturday morning walk, Linda invited me back to Kirkbarrow. She wanted to show me her property, which is surrounded by beautiful gardens where a new bee colony has recently taken up residence.

Let's take a tour and explore all the unique trees, plants, and wildlife.

Just 3 days until our first summer walk! ☀️🌷🌼

The Vicarage Park and Blind Beck Nature Corridor Walk will explore two of the principle areas common land for biodiversity in Southern Kendal. The circular walk will be about 4 miles with gentle inclines, but some steep rough paths. So please bring good walking boots. The precise meeting point will be the side carpark of the Milnthorpe Road Campus of Kendal College at 10am - what three words exact location: admiral.glow.wasp.

The weather is meant to turn to light rain Saturday but currently looking ok for the morning. Please come with protection from sun and potential light rain. 📍

If you would like to join us please book your place here: https://naturalkendal.org.uk/summer-walks/

A local CRKC team has recently completed the final session of a 12-month river sampling programme at Beckmickle Ing. The work formed part of a nationwide initiative led by Surfers Against Sewage, helping to collect pollution data for a national database monitoring river health across the country.

Another CRKC team also carried out a similar sampling programme near Kendal, contributing further valuable local data to the project.

Last week we caught up with Paula and Ros from Kendal Swifts Group

Kendal’s swift population has seen a significant decline, and these incredible "Screamers" are now on the UK Red List for conservation concern. One of the biggest threats they face is the loss of nesting sites as old buildings are renovated or eaves are blocked.

Do you have swifts nesting in your roof, eaves, or walls? If you've seen them "screaming" around your house or disappearing into a nook in your property, please let us know!

If you don't have nests but want to welcome swifts to your property, installing a swift box or brick is a fantastic way to help the next generation.
For expert advice on choosing the right box, how to install it, and to order online, visit: https://www.actionforswifts.com/introduction

Let's work together to keep the sound of the British summer alive in Kendal. Please share this post to help us spread the word!
