Please take one minute to watch this video from Joseph Rowntree about how poverty affects children...it's so true and says it so well. At Tribal Songs CIC we see just these problems every week when we go into schools. And as someone with lived experience of some of these challenges I can confirm how true it is. But I can also confirm there's a way out. It comes with experiencing another way - vicariously or actually, through unearthing even the tiniest personal gifts, overcoming the relationship skills deficit and grounding oneself in nature, or community. These things as well as equipping them are all an 'escape' from levels of dis-ease and possibly torment for children. Children have a natural talent for this and there's good evidence it saves them. Because let's be frank - for a ten year old child living in poverty, witnessing domestic violence or substance abuse and experiencing neglect, the local council's development plans, as absolutely vital as they are, will come too late. Sure, this is a shameless plug but I'm going to say it anyway. Small as we are, at Tribal Songs we're offering something real to children. When I watch the eyes of the boy with no school uniform spring open in awe and a big grin spread across his face as his eyes lock mine I know we've reached him. When at the end of the session they say ' I'm going to study now to make sure I get a decent job and I'm going to be nicer to my brother ' I believe they will. When they say ' I'm going to look after nature more. Next time I go to the park I'm going to pick up litter' I believe they will. When I hear them talk about their session on the allotment of our social enterprise partner Pioneers Project CIC, a critical part of our Tribal Schools programme , where the children get a chance to practice 'doing', I believe that the learning will stick.

And I'm living proof that there is another way, another future 😊

The National Trust has announced a 10 year plan to rewild 250,000 hectares (about 1.5 times the size of Greater London) of land across the UK. This includes restoring peatlands and wildflower meadows, managing farmland in nature friendly ways and connecting fragmented landscapes to boost wildlife recovery. The photo shows Stourhead. Indigenous Environmental Knowledge - inspiring Nature Positive approaches...

"Beyond providing empirical data, Indigenous knowledge challenges the very foundations of the scientific approach, whether in terms of the place of ethics, the relationship between humans and nature, or the long timeframe of observations. In agriculture, traditional medicine and climatology, this knowledge has already inspired major innovations, which are often more sustainable than purely technological solutions."

From Brazil to China, from the Sámi communities of the Arctic to the Kalahari in Namibia, ancestral knowledge systems are reshaping scientific research today.

Rooted in deep observation of ecosystems and passed down orally across generations, these practices offer vital insights for tackling climate disruption, health crises, and the limits of a mechanised world.

We're in Riverside Primary School in Plymouth this term and what a fabulous group of children and teachers they are. This session we were getting closer to nature - learning how Tribal heritage people from India and Thailand view and interact with nature, and what nature means to us - encouraging children to see the magnificence of nature and what it can add to their lives. Wonderful acting children - and fascinating facts about seahorses. Aren't they just incredible?! ❤️ #ʟᴏᴠᴇɴᴀᴛᴜʀᴇ

The Lahu people of Thailand have a strong belief in the importance of maintaining harmony and balance in life, just as in nature. They recognise that life brings challenges and with it sometimes difficult emotions which they believe in helping each other through. This saying reminds us of the importance of emotional balance - that healing comes from expressing our emotions (the rain) but that it is joy and positivity (the sun) that will help bring us back to life. The wisdom is in the balance.
