There are grave concerns for the safety of the around 175 activists arbitrarily detained and being transported to Israel, after their vessels were boarded in international waters near Greece and Israel jammed their communication channels, severing their ability to coordinate or ask for help.

This underscores the dangerous consequences of decades of impunity for Israel’s ongoing atrocity crimes against Palestinians, including genocide in the Gaza Strip and apartheid, and its unlawful occupation of Palestinian territory.

The crew of the intercepted vessels must be immediately and unconditionally released. While in custody, the Israeli authorities must ensure that all activists are immediately granted access to consular support, treated humanely and protected from torture and other ill-treatment.

Amnesty International rappelle que les conclusions de la commission d'enquête doivent donner lieu à des enquêtes approfondies, indépendantes et impartiales visant à identifier les responsables des homicides de manifestants commis depuis avril 2001 et faire en sorte qu'ils soient traduits en justice dans le cadre d'un procès équitable.

Prominent political activist and former spokesperson of the April 6 Youth Movement, Mohamed Adel, has been in arbitrary detention since June 2018. In September 2023, a misdemeanour court in Aga, Dakahlia governorate, sentenced him to four years in prison on bogus charges including “joining an unlawful group”. Authorities have refused to release him even though he has spent over seven years in prison, as he is facing investigations into similar bogus charges in separate cases all stemming from the peaceful exercise of his human rights.
According to information gathered by Amnesty International, on 10 January 2026, some prisoners in 10th of Ramadan prison assaulted him and attempted to strangle him, while prison officials failed to intervene. He is denied adequate healthcare for numerous health conditions including chest pain, a torn knee ligament, and shoulder dislocation.
