👏🏻🌲🌳 After closures at the Bennachie Visitor Centre and car park on the 9th and at Donview on the 10th June, Forestry and Land Scotland have cleared some fallen and unsafe trees.
Thank you to them for keeping access open to our beloved hill and paths.

👷🏻‍♀️👷🏻‍♂️💪🏻⛏️⚒️ Hard work and clarty dubs! What a fantastic turnout from the Bailies of Bennachie volunteers this week, they put in such a brilliant effort.
Our focus took us into a new and exciting area of the hill, one that is really beginning to show the benefits of all the hard work put in over recent months by the BLPG volunteers. As activity at the Pittodrie site continues to grow, particularly with the ongoing clearance of historic features, we are also adapting our regular maintenance work to support this developing area as part of our wider work parties.
Following a particularly wet winter, the site has suffered in places, with sections of path becoming degraded. This week’s efforts were aimed at starting to address these issues—helping to stabilise and protect what path remains, while improving overall conditions for both volunteers and visitors. Alongside this, we also tackled some important housekeeping tasks to tidy the area and enhance the experience for everyone enjoying the hill.
As footfall increases in this part of Bennachie, we’d kindly remind all visitors to follow the Scottish Outdoor Access Code when moving around the site—respecting the landscape, wildlife, and the work being carried out.

Thanks again to all involved - great progress made, and plenty more to come!

🌱 A few weeks ago, an observant visitor hiking on Millstone Hill came across a single trailing plant of New Zealand pirri-pirri bur. The species found is surprising as it is a very invasive non-native usually found in coastal sites, where every effort is made to control it. Our Bailies of Bennachie environment Trustee, David Bale, has previously come across this plant. Once on another part of Millstone Hill and another close to Bennachie Visitor Centre. All 3 records were next to paths. It is very distinctive in appearance, as can be seen from the photo, so please keep a look out for it. 👀

If found please send the record to NESBReC North East Scotland Biological Records Centre, as well as to Forestry and Land Scotland. If uncertain about your identification, please alert David at [email protected], together with a 10 figure grid reference so that he can check it out. It seems to be found on Bennachie very sporadically, most likely imported as seed from coastal sites on people's walking socks. The seeds are attached to hooked burrs that readily hook onto socks, so it is important to ensure you have not collected any if visiting coastal sand dunes. It is especially invasive in coastal habitats, but we would not wish it to become established on any part of Bennachie. The plants found recently and in previous years were dug up and destroyed. The sites have been monitored since to ensure there is no recovery from buried seed.

"My mums dog, Edith, went missing this afternoon (Monday 1st June) at the Back o' Bennachie. She was last spotted at Rowan tree about 4 o’clock. She’s a Roman rescue so she’s very nervous."
Further notes, Edith broke free of her harness but is chipped. Do not approach her as she is so nervous she'll run away. Instead contact Elsa Bisset on FB

⚒️🔨The next Bailies of Bennachie Work Party is upcoming. Look out for our intrepid volunteers carrying out their valuable work on the hill.
Part of the ‘appropriate kit’ requirement for these volunteers is a Long Sleeve Top. The ones we have available on our website are with volunteers in mind but equally well suited to those who like to slip on a top to cover up to hide from the sun and the midgies! 🦟😎🌞
⛰️The unique 'shadows' image on the front of these tops was designed by Alex, one of our Trustees and the image on the back is the standard Bailiies' logo.

🚴🏻‍♂️🚽🐝 On his bike to dispose of a bike!
Ken one of our Bailies of Bennachie Trustees cycled to the toilets at Rowantree car park to dispose of a newly forming wasp bike. Wasps are not a companion you want in the toilet 😨
Good job Ken, on behalf of the walkers, thank you.
