And that's a wrap! A wonderful Volunteers' Week here at the tool library, including several new sign-ups, surpassing 3,600 tool loans, and a cracking start on the final phase of the shelving build, with Mark leading an all-day drop in and give it a go carpentry workshop.

With Volunteers' Week in full swing, we're delighted to highlight our tool maintenance volunteer, Anna, seen here recently repairing a lawn mower which a customer had returned with a note saying the motor had burnt out. Most people would think that would be the end of it and consign the mower to the tip, but not Anna! Perfectly encapsulating Inverness Tool Library's ethos, she set about fixing it, including ordering a replacement motor part via ebay. As Anna commented: "It may not at first seem cost-effective, but it is ethical, and once it's fixed, means another piece of equipment is kept in circulation and diverted from landfill."

Integral to celebrating the United Nations International Volunteer Year, and as we approach our contribution to Volunteers' Week with an all-day 'drop in and give volunteering a go' workshop (June 3rd, 10am - 3pm), 2026 sees a call to governments, organisations and communities worldwide to champion volunteerism in all its forms, while fostering inclusive policies and ensuring that the contributions of volunteers are both valued and celebrated.
Volunteer Scotland's No Volunteers, No Community campaign and manifesto calls upon those with political power to recognise the societal importance of volunteering. The manifesto also calls for investment in the development of supported volunteering projects across Scotland to help people with additional barriers to access and sustain meaningful volunteering.

And that's our smart new sign in place, installed by ITL's workshop lead, Mark, ably assisted by recently recruited volunteer Anna - straight in at the deep end on the day of her induction no less! A big shout-out to New Start Highland CEO, James Dunbar, for gifting us the sign.

No matter how small, or big, a good job well done can bring huge rewards! Tool library volunteer Lucy recently completed a couple of projects using tools borrowed from the library. As she says: "For the first time in 3+ years I have heating in my kitchen! I’m incredulous that I did that, cavity anchors and everything. Also refitted my kitchen window with new hinges so it doesn’t have a massive gap down the side and actually opens. I feel like I’ve won the lottery!"
