We’re proud to share a piece written by our Marketing Manager, Evie, as part of her Prisma series on Tamil women in the UK.

It features our Head of Counselling, Pathna Santramohan, who reflects on her journey after fleeing the Sri Lankan civil war, and the life she rebuilt across Europe and the UK.

In the article, Pathna speaks honestly about trauma, identity, and the silence many women are taught to carry. She also shares how that experience shapes the way she now supports others, particularly women navigating domestic abuse within our community.
At Agal, this work is not abstract. It is lived, understood, and held with care.

If you or someone you know needs support, we offer confidential counselling and can help connect you with the right services.

April is Sexual Assault Awareness Month.

At Agal Wellbeing Services, our counsellors often see how experiences of domestic abuse and sexual violence can overlap. These are not always spoken about openly, particularly within South Asian communities, where conversations around relationships, consent and marriage can be shaped by cultural expectations.

It is important to say this clearly: consent matters in every context, it’s mutual respect for eachother.

Marriage or partnership does not remove the need for consent.

No means no, always.

For some, it can be difficult to recognise or name these experiences. There may be feelings of confusion, shame, or a sense that something is “not quite right” but hard to articulate. You are not alone in this.

Creating space for these conversations, gently and without judgement, is an important step towards understanding and support.

If anything here resonates with you, Agal offers a safe and confidential space to talk. If your situation is more specific, we can also help connect you with services that are best suited to support you.

🌿 Coffee Morning: Barriers to Reporting

Join us this Thursday for an open and supportive conversation on a topic that is often left unspoken.

🗓 Thursday 2nd April
🕒 12:30 to 1:00 PM
📍 Online on Microsoft Teams
💬 Free to attend

We will be exploring the barriers to reporting within South Asian communities, from stigma and cultural pressures to fear and access to support.

This is a safe space to listen, share and learn together. Whether this topic feels personal to you or you simply want to understand more, you are very welcome.
