He looks like heโ€™s having the best night of his week. But right now, one in four men is fighting a silent, brutal battle with his mental health. Most of the time, male depression doesnโ€™t look like a dark room or isolationโ€”it looks like a bloke laughing at a football match, desperately masking a suffocating weight inside his head.

Su***de remains the single biggest killer of men under 50 in the UK. We will shout until our throats bleed for a game of football, but we stay completely silent when we are drowning.

Don't wait for a funeral to wish you'd had a proper conversation.

Look at your mates tonight. Really look at them. Before the final whistle blows and everyone heads home alone with their thoughts, check in on them. Drop the mask.

And if it's you carrying the heavy load tonight? You donโ€™t have to do it by yourself. Come walk with us this week. No pressure, no judgementโ€”just ordinary blokes walking shoulder-to-shoulder.

So... our walk this evening was a bit different...

๐Ÿ™ LONELINESS AWARENESS WEEK ๐Ÿ™

This week is loneliness awareness week, and one of the most common reasons men tuen up to our walk is because they're lonely!

Earlier today, I attended an event hosted by Kim Leadbeater MBE and The Jo Cox Foundation in Mirfield, which brought together lots of local charities, groups, and organisations who work to combat loneliness. It was brilliant to meet so many great people and hear more about what they do, and to tell them about Men Walking and Talking.

Tomorrow marks 10 years to the day since Jo Cox was tragically murdered in 2016, and Kim passionately and admirably continues the work that Jo started when she was with us.

To pay tribute both to Jo and to this fantastic ongoing work, tonight I took the lads on a tour of places in Huddersfield that they can go if they ever feel lonely. I managed to squeeze in 18 places, I'll list or tag them below๐Ÿ™

I could have done 50 places if we did a longer walk!

There is SO MUCH good support out there, and one of the takeaways from today was we need to help raise awareness that they exist.

So if you ever feel lonely, need a chat, a good brew, or just not sure where to turn and need pointing in the right direction, here's 18 places in town where you can go.

Further still, there's LOADS across Kirkless! (I'd be here all night if I listed those...)

1. Fresh Futures - Brian Jackson House
2. Huddersfield Library Hub (lots of community groups e.g. knit and natter)
3. Civic Centre 1 (find out more here about all of these groups!)
4. Cultural Heart (opening soon!)
5. The County Beerhouse (yes ..a pub, and while we have a no alcohol policy on our walks pubs are great places for some to combat loneliness, and often they give great support to their community!)
6. hoot creative arts
7. The Jo Cox building at the University
8. St Peter's Church (other religions and churches are available, and they all help people in times of need)
9. Huddersfield Mission
10. The Welcome Centre. Food Bank and More
11. Huddersfield Street kitchen
12. S2R Create Space
13. CLEAR
14. Hive Huddersfield CIC
15. Invictus Wellbeing
16. Tommy's Lounge
17. I think I miscounted, maybe it was 17...
18. Men Walking And Talking - Huddersfield

Thank you to all of these places and for all of the great work you do. If you haven't seen or heard of them, please look them up, go for a chat, or drop me a message to find out more.

Most of all, if you're feeling lonely, please not you don't have to be. If you want or need support, it is definitely available to you ๐Ÿ’™๐Ÿ™

"Iโ€™m fine." ๐Ÿคซ

How many times a week do you say that, when inside your head it feels like a completely different story?

As blokes, we are masters at wearing the mask. We pretend we have it all together because we think that's what we're supposed to do. But trapping yourself inside your own mind is exhaustingโ€”and honestly, you can't think your way out of a dark room alone.

๐Ÿšถ๐Ÿผโ€โ™‚๏ธSometimes, you just need to change your environment.

๐ŸšถThatโ€™s exactly why Men Walking and Talking exists.

We aren't a clinical group. There are no therapy couches and absolutely zero pressure to pour your heart out. We just get out into the fresh air, stretch our legs, and walk shoulder-to-shoulder.

There is something powerful about walking side-by-side. The eye contact isn't forced, the pressure drops, and the internal noise finally starts to quiet down. You quickly realise that the stories your mind tells you when you're isolatedโ€”that you're a burden, or that you're completely aloneโ€”simply aren't true.

Today, we have 85 weekly groups across the UK full of everyday blokes who just want a walk, a proper chat, and a community of good people.

Whether you want to talk about whatโ€™s heavily weighing on your mind, or you just want to talk about football, the weather, and have a laughโ€”you are welcome here.

You donโ€™t have to carry the weight by yourself anymore. Let your first step be joining us for a walk this week.

One of the biggest things I've learned since our Men Walking and Talking Huddersfield group was set up is that there are so many decent blokes out there who could be your next mate/s. Until you join the walks and get to know a few people... You aren't aware of the possibilities.

From planning weekend walks to going to watch Town together; From pub gatherings to curry nights; From going to the gym together to laser tag... I've seen people from our Huddersfield contingent gather outside of our usual weekly walks for all sorts of social activities that benefit both physical and mental wellbeing, and encourage a more enjoyable lifestyle.

But if you don't come and get to know us, you'll never know the possibilities!

The details below never change, so if you can't make it this week, then use the information below for next week, or the one after!
