🌧️ A wet but productive day at Hounslow Heath! 🌿

Yesterday, 7th October, volunteers from Mace, Costain and Kier joined our regular Hounslow Heath Conservation Volunteers for a day of practical work.

Despite persistent drizzle, everyone got stuck in and did a fabulous job attaching chicken wire to the cattle fencing to help prevent muntjac deer from becoming trapped. They also cleared a one metre wide access path inside the pen and picked litter that was previously inaccessible.

A huge thank you from the Countryside Rangers to everyone who braved the weather. Your hard work and enthusiasm made a real difference! 💚

🌿 Hounslow Heath Conservation Volunteers 🌿

Our fantastic Wednesday volunteers were back in action this week, continuing the heathland restoration work at Hounslow Heath.

Working in a different area within the heather pen, we carefully removed brambles that had become entangled among the heathers. Using hand tools, the group worked selectively to give the heather more light and space to thrive while protecting the surrounding habitat.

We were also joined by a corporate volunteer group from Heathrow, who worked brilliantly alongside our regular volunteers. Together, we filled 11 very full bags with cleared scrub! 🌿

Our regular HHCV volunteers also cleared a load of litter hidden within the scrub, leaving the area cleaner for wildlife and visitors alike.

A huge thank you to everyone who gave their time and energy. Your hard work is helping put Hounslow Heath centre stage for nature recovery! 💚

🌿 Hounslow Heath Conservation Volunteers 🌿

Our fantastic Wednesday volunteers were back in action today, continuing the vital heathland restoration work at Hounslow Heath.

Working carefully with hand tools, the group removed low growing gorse, broom and bramble that was beginning to smother the heather. This selective approach gives the heather more light and space to thrive while protecting the wider habitat.

This week, we were also joined by a small corporate volunteer group from BP, who worked brilliantly alongside our regular volunteers.

A huge thank you to everyone who gave their time and energy today. Together, we’re helping put Hounslow Heath centre stage for nature recovery! 🌿💚

🌿 Another Productive Day on Hounslow Heath 🌿

Yesterday, our Hounslow Heath Conservation Volunteers were joined by a small corporate volunteer group from Heathrow as we continued our careful work protecting areas of established heather from encroaching gorse, broom and bramble.

Using hand tools, the team selectively removed vegetation growing directly through and over the heather. This is delicate but essential work: if left unmanaged, these faster growing plants would gradually shade out the heather and take over the available space and nutrients.

By working carefully around the existing plants, we are giving the heather the light and breathing room it needs while helping to maintain the Heath’s valuable mosaic of habitats.

A brilliant effort from everyone who came along, including our visitors from Heathrow. Thank you all for your patience, care and hard work! 🙏

🌿 Hounslow Heath Conservation Volunteers 🌿

Today, our fantastic volunteers focused on carefully removing low growing gorse, broom and bramble that was directly smothering the heather.

Without this important work, these faster growing and more dominant species would soon outcompete the heather for light, space and nutrients, eventually causing it to perish. By selectively removing them with hand tools, we can protect the existing heather and help preserve this valuable heathland habitat.

A huge thank you to everyone who joined us today and contributed to this vital conservation work. 🙏

🌿 A Fantastic Team Effort at Hounslow Heath! 🌿

Today, the Hounslow Heath Conservation Volunteers were joined by a corporate group from MACE and BEUMER - and together they did a fabulous job!

The corporate volunteers began the huge task of attaching chicken wire to the Heather Pen fencing. In just one day, they managed to:

✅ Attach an impressive 145 metres of chicken wire
✅ Clear a one metre wide access route along 200 metres of fencing

Not bad for a day’s work! However, we still have more than 1,600 metres to complete, so any additional help would be greatly appreciated.

The chicken wire is being installed to help prevent wildlife, particularly muntjac deer, from becoming trapped in the cattle fencing.

Meanwhile, our regular HHCV volunteers finished the work started at the scrape last week- well done, everyone!

The weather may not have been quite as kind to us today, but we have been spoilt lately, so we can’t complain!

Yesterday, our volunteers continued the work started on the heather scrape during last week’s session- and once again, we had a fantastic turnout!

A huge thank you to everyone who came along and contributed. These sessions aren’t only about conservation; they’re also a chance to enjoy each other’s company, have good conversations and spend time outdoors with like minded people.

Yesterday, we were delighted to be joined by a corporate volunteer group from Heathrow, alongside our wonderful regular volunteers.

Our own volunteer group also reached a record number, which was truly amazing to see! A huge thank you to everyone who came along and helped make the session such a success 🙏

🌿 Hounslow Heath Conservation Volunteers 🌿

With the heat today, we kept our volunteer session a little shorter than usual and took the opportunity to enjoy a fantastic nature walk led by Ranger Nathan & Volunteer Ranger Mick Massie. 🦋🌳🐝

We had a huge turnout today, which was absolutely amazing to see! A massive thank you to everyone who came along and gave their time 💚

The difference our volunteers have made to Hounslow Heath over the years really cannot be overstated. Without your hard work, enthusiasm and dedication, the heath simply wouldn’t be the place it has become today.

But there is always more to do, and we always need more volunteers! Whether you're interested in wildlife and conservation, want to learn more about your local green space, or simply fancy some fresh air and good company, come along and join us. Everyone is welcome. 🌱

🌿 Volunteer Rangers & Mace in Action! 🌿

Last Wednesday, our regular Volunteer Rangers were joined by a fantastic corporate volunteer group from Mace for another productive session on Hounslow Heath.

Working together, the team tackled one of our main access paths, cutting back encroaching vegetation and widening sections that were gradually becoming overgrown and difficult to access.

🚒 This is particularly important work, as these routes need to remain clear and accessible for the fire service in the event of an emergency - especially during the dry summer months when the risk of wildfire is much greater.

A huge thank you to everyone who came along and put in such a great effort. 💚

We always need more helping hands to look after this wonderful green space. Without our volunteers, much of this work simply wouldn't be possible.
