Rectory Park – proposed new sport and activity facility

Working with the Football Foundation, we are looking to apply for funding to create a new outdoor community sports and activity space at Rectory Park, called a PlayZone. A PlayZone is similar to a multi use games area and includes floodlights and gated access.

Our aim is to help more local residents become more active and live healthier lives. Whether you are active now or not, we would like to hear your views on this proposal. The survey will take only a couple of minutes to complete and the link is below.

Everyone who takes part will have the opportunity to be entered into a draw to win one of two £50 Sunderland Gift Cards. The survey closes on 8 June 2026.

A woman from Houghton-le-Spring has lost four stone in a bid to make her deceased mother happy and to be able to wear her new dress at her daughter’s wedding.

Hayley Stoker, 59, said she has always carried “too much weight” since her childhood, but it was the death of her mother in November 2023 which proved to be the catalyst for her to shed the pounds.

Legal executive Hayley said: “I know my mam used to worry about my weight and health and after she passed away I decided I needed to lose the weight for her - I knew it would make her happy.”
In April 2024, Hayley enrolled in Slimming World’s Peterlee group where she replaced unhealthy snacking habits with a diet including plenty of fruit and vegetables.
And it wasn’t long before Hayley was given an additional incentive to shed the pounds.

She added: “It was in July of the same year that my daughter announced she was engaged and was getting married. I bought the dress I liked, which was too small for me at the time, but I wanted that incentive to lose the weight to fit into it.
“I wanted be able to wear the dress I liked at the wedding and to look good in the photographs.

“With the help of Slimming World, I now have a much healthier diet and do regular exercise, walking 20,000 steps every day.”

Successful in her quest, Hayley was able to wear her dress at the wedding after losing four stone in weight.

She said: “I feel so much better than I did when I was carrying the extra weight. I’ve learnt that I can still go on holiday and enjoy myself and get any extra weight off when I return home.”
Hayley has urged anyone struggling with their weight to sign up to a Slimming World group.
She said: “I couldn’t have lost my weight without the support of Slimming World. I had tried all different diets, and nothing had worked.
“The people at the Peterlee group I attend are now my friends and we are so supportive of each other.”

Wonderful news! We can’t wait to visit 😊

✨ OUR VERY FIRST VISITOR! ✨

This morning we had the absolute joy of welcoming Archie and his mum and dad as the very first family to step through the doors of our brand‑new rescue centre — and we could not be more excited.

After a month of moving, building, cleaning, painting, planning, stressing, laughing, lifting, and doing all the usual animal care in between… this moment meant everything.
Seeing Archie’s face light up as he met our residents reminded us exactly why we do what we do.

Thank you, Archie, and thank you to his lovely parents for being the first to share this milestone with us. You’ve officially made Richmond Exotics history.

We can’t wait to welcome many more of you through our doors — the animals are ready, the team is buzzing, and our rescue home is finally alive with visitors.

💚 Here’s to the first of many wonderful days ahead.

What's your thoughts? Should teachers who commit offences outside school lose their right to teach?

As usual please be respectful of others lawful views. Agree to disagree if necessary and scroll on by if the post is of no interest.

A teacher who was spotted walking naked in the street by pub goers has claimed he had been delivering food and was outside for 'less than a minute'.

Andrew Peacock, a former deputy head of maths at Hetton Academy, faces being banned from the classroom after locals saw him going for a stroll in the n**e in the Tyneside town of Hebburn in 2023.

The self-confessed naturist was found naked on Ellison Street, close to the River Tyne, by two members of the public who later reported him to police on November 11.

The pair told cops Mr Peacock then got into his car and began driving up and down the street, causing them to feel the need to hide, a Teaching Regulation Agency (TRA) hearing heard.

He was later stopped in his car by an officer, who noticed he 'had a grey hoodie placed over his lap and his bare legs were showing', the tribunal heard.

Mr Peacock was arrested and accepted a caution, but contended the incident was a 'simple act of naturism' and claimed to have spent less than a minute outside, TRA case presenter Leah Redden told the panel.

'It is [Mr Peacock's] position that he is a naturist and had been delivering food in the local area before deciding to go for a walk by the river,' she added.

During his police interview, Mr Peacock also denied seeking to be seen, intending to alarm anyone, or seeking sexual gratification, the hearing heard.

Hetton Academy principal Vicky Pinkney gave evidence during the virtual hearing on Thursday, telling the panel that Mr Peacock didn't tell her about his arrest for more than a week.

The school only found out when the local authority designated officer (LADO) contacted her. She subsequently called Mr Peacock into a meeting and a disciplinary investigation began.

'He seemed to think that he was a naturist and it didn't affect school and that it was acceptable for him to be out and about without his clothes on,' she told the panel.

Mr Peacock claimed he was unaware of the need to inform the school and wanted to 'avoid attracting media attention' to protect its reputation.

Asked about Mr Peacock's teaching skills, Ms Pinkney added: 'He was an okay teacher, results were not always where perhaps they should have been but we were working to develop that.'

One of the women who saw Mr Peacock unclothed also told the hearing it made her feel 'panicked and terrified' and 'made her think twice about being out at night'.

Ms Redden said it was the TRA's view that Mr Peacock's action 'constituted a criminal offence' which caused witnesses to hide and fear they were being followed.

She added that Mr Peacock 'would have been aware' that he had to walk past a number of houses during his walk.

At the hearing, Mr Peacock was accused of being been naked in a public place and being arrested but failing to inform anyone at the school.

He was also accused of behaviour that constituted a criminal offence as well as dishonest conduct, having accepted a caution.

The tribunal found each offence proven and also found Mr Peacock's actions constituted misconduct.

The panel will now decide whether to recommend a teaching ban is imposed by the Secretary of State for Education.

Congratulations. We are so happy to see your recognition for the ongoing legacy in Connor's name.

We are honoured to announce that we Tanya & Simon Brown have both been awarded an MBE in the Kings New Year Honours List 2026 for services to the Sunderland Community and knife crime prevention

We are deeply humbled, honoured and proud to receive this prestigious award and in all honesty we are still in shock.

This recognition comes from the most painful chapter of our life — the loss of our son Connor in 2019 to knife crime. No parent should ever have to endure that heartbreak, and there is not a day that passes without him in our thoughts. Connor is our motivation, our strength, and the reason we chose to turn unimaginable grief into a mission to protect other young people from the same fate.

Everything we have done since has been driven by one simple hope: that by educating, listening to, and supporting young people, we can save lives and give them the belief that their future matters. Working with schools, youth groups, families, and communities across Sunderland and the Northeast has shown us how powerful honest conversations, compassion, and early intervention can be.
This MBE is not a symbol of personal achievement, but of love, resilience, and collective action. It belongs to every young person who has trusted us with their story, every family who has stood beside us, and every professional and volunteer who refuses to accept knife crime as inevitable.

Thank you to everyone for holding us up when we could barely stand, for wrapping your arms around us and giving us the strength to carry on, and for allowing us to honour our son’s memory through this work. We will continue, for Connor and for every young life that deserves to grow up safe, heard, and hopeful.
"Our youth today is our future tomorrow, by listening to our youth we are protecting the future for everyone"

With love from the bottom of our hearts Tanya & Simon Brown
