Our dog of the month is Billy
Age 2
"It is no secret how much I love cuddly, funny, sensitive Billy boy with his big, expressive eyes.
I have been enjoying the pleasure of Billy's company on regular foster breaks recently, as he finds kennel life quite difficult.
I can tell you that Billy is sweet, loving, incredibly cuddly, funny, eager to please, a good listener, attentive, affectionate, quiet, pretty obedient and smart. I have left him for periods up to three and a half hours and he has been really good. He does sometimes try to slip out the door with me when I leave but once I have gone, he just chills out on my bed. He does not touch my belongings. The only things he ever destroys are some of his toys! He enjoys chewing on tennis balls and then ripping them up.
Billy can also be sensitive, worried, unconfident, unsure and sometimes frightened. He can struggle with trust. He worries what people will do to him or what they will make him do; that they may hurt him or take away the few things he has. As such, it is incredibly important that his new owner understands anxious dogs and their body language and will treat him with gentleness. Billy has been known to resource-guard so knowledge and sensitivity around that is a must. In saying that, It is very rare that I experience any problems with Billy in that regard now. He will drop his toys in my lap and eat next to me. This is the result of slow relationship-building and giving him confidence that I am someone who gives things to him instead of taking them away.
Billy is calm and completely quiet in the house.
He is a bit of a velcro dog; wanting lots of cuddles. He likes to climb all over me and and nudges my arm up to tell me to give him strokes. He has occasionally gone to my bedroom to chill out when I am working in another room now which is a good sign.
Billy walks very well on the lead; usually on a loose lead, with lots of sniffing. He can sometimes play with the lead - either because something has stressed him out so he holds the lead for emotional support or just when he wants a game. We are working on that.
Billy is usually polite with other dogs when we are out, even when they bark at him. However, if a dog makes him anxious or runs up to him when they are off-lead, he may get worried and tell them to go away.
Billy enjoys training (in a kind, force-free way only) and learning things and pleasing you and he picks up training behaviours really well. Recently he has been learning a hand-touch, as well as working on impulse control. He loves getting gentle praise.
Billy listens to you. He checks in with you. He (usually!) does as you ask.
He can sometimes jump up when wanting cuddles, reassurance or attention (work in progress)
If you are able to meet Billy slowly and give him your support, patience and sensitivity, I promise you will have the most loving, cuddly, sweet companion. He has so many wonderful qualities and is an absolute joy to live with.
Billy needs a quiet home with one or two people.
Please help beautiful, silly Billy boy."
