David Stanley Ringer

20th Feb 1931 to 6th October 2026

David sadly passed away on 6 October after a short period in hospital. He will have been known by many of our members as a very fine judge.
He was the consummate horseman - training racehorses from Saffron House in Newmarket for many years and also as one of the most respected judges of the 1970s onwards.
David loved judging - especially hunters and cobs - although he was just as happy with a class of ponies or hacks. He was a fine rider and was much in demand over the years at many a county show, and at HOYS and RIHS.

He was always immaculately turned out and was resolutely fair in his decisions. Many will recall him in his red cords and bright sweaters, always dapper. David had a wicked sense of humour and was a great raconteur.
Above all he was a devoted family man who was justly proud of the legacy he started.
Only last week Jack and Henry Callan (sons of David's granddaughter Trisha and her jockey husband Neil) won champion apprentice and amateur respectively. Ironically David missed their amazing achievement by just over a week.
We send sincere condolences to David's wife Paddy, their children Helen and Jack and the extended family.

A heartfelt thank you to David Ingle for his outstanding contribution to Hickstead and to the wider showing world over the past 15 years.

Thank you, David, for everything you have given to the sport we all love. Wishing you good health, happiness and every success in the next chapter. ❤️

David Ingle, Showing Director of Hickstead, has announced he is stepping down from the role.

“On behalf of the entire Hickstead team, I would like to extend our heartfelt thanks to David for the considerable time, dedication and commitment he has given to Hickstead throughout his tenure, as well as for the many improvements he has helped to deliver during this time,” said Hickstead Executive Director Lizzie Bunn. “We are sincerely grateful for everything he has done for Hickstead and for the part he has played in its continued development.”

David Ingle commented: “For the past 15 years, Hickstead has been a significant part of my life and one of the greatest privileges I have ever had. I spent four wonderful years working alongside the late Roger Stack, learning from one of the most respected figures in our sport, before having the honour of serving as Director of Showing for the last 11 years.

“Working entirely on a voluntary basis, every hour, every show and every challenge has been driven by my passion for the sport and my commitment to Hickstead. That has made the experience all the more rewarding and meaningful.

“During my time, the role has grown and evolved enormously, bringing with it many challenges, achievements and memories that I will always treasure. But sadly the time has come for me to step away from a position that has meant so much to me.

“This is not how I envisaged my journey at Hickstead ending, but sometimes circumstances determine the path we must take. Since my accident at Balmoral in 2024, the injuries I sustained have made the physical and mental demands of the role increasingly difficult to manage. With further operations still ahead, I have been forced to face a reality that cannot be ignored, reassess my priorities and put my health first.

“While stepping away is undoubtedly bittersweet, I do so with immense pride in all that has been achieved and deep gratitude to everyone who has shared this journey with me. I would like to thank the competitors, judges, sponsors, colleagues and friends who have supported me throughout my time in Sussex.

“Hickstead will always hold a special place in my heart, and I leave with countless happy memories. A special thank you must go to the stewarding team, who I have always believed are simply the very best in the sport. Their dedication, knowledge and professionalism set the benchmark in showing. We have shared long days, challenging moments and countless laughs along the way, and I will always be grateful for their support and unwavering commitment.

“As I leave this role, my hope for the future of showing is that organisations work harder together. We are stronger when we collaborate, and the long-term success of our sport depends on unity, cooperation and a willingness to embrace positive change. There is also vital work to be done to improve equine welfare standards within showing, and this must become a far greater priority across the industry.

“For now, my focus must be on my health and home. It has been an honour and a privilege to serve a sport and a venue that I have loved so dearly.”

SUPREME CHAMPION AT HOYS 2026!

What an extraordinary achievement for Alice Homer, riding Loraine Homer’s Tidy Town, to be crowned Supreme Horse Champion at Horse of the Year Show 2026! 🌟

Having already claimed the Small Show Hunter of the Year title, Alice and Tidy Town went on to make history, becoming the first Small Show Hunter in over 40 years to win the coveted HOYS Supreme Horse Championship!

And what a wonderful family story behind this remarkable success. Tidy Town, affectionately known as “Guinness”, was purchased in Ireland as a foal by Alice’s grandfather, making this historic victory all the more special for the Homer family.

The ten-year-old Irish-bred gelding is by Superior Premium out of Ricardos Trump and has enjoyed a tremendously consistent partnership with Alice. The pair arrived at HOYS unbeaten in Small Show Hunter classes throughout the 2026 season, a remarkable achievement in itself.

At HOYS, Guinness was judged by Rachel Moore Rooney (ride) and Susan Stockley-Bridges (conformation), before going on to secure the ultimate Supreme Championship honours.

From a foal purchased in Ireland by Alice’s grandfather to the very pinnacle of British showing — what an incredible journey and a truly memorable family triumph.

Huge congratulations to Alice, Loraine and the entire Homer family on this historic achievement, from everyone at Sport Horse Breeding of Great Britain.

A wonderful celebration of the quality of our show hunters, the dedication of those who produce them and the generations of knowledge and passion behind their success. 🐴

🏆 HOYS 2026 – Tigbourne Takes the Lightweight Hunter Crown!

Congratulations to Hannah Horton and Tigbourne, winners of the Catplant Group of Companies Lightweight Hunter of the Year Championship at Horse of the Year Show 2026.

The nine-year-old British-bred gelding has an especially interesting breeding story and a wonderful connection to his breeder, the late Daphne Thorneycroft.

Tigbourne’s breeding:

* Sire: Roviris
* Dam: Fascinator
* Dam sire: Renkum Offender
* Breeder: Daphne Thorneycroft

Tigbourne was conceived and born at Etheridge Farm, with Ann Bassett and Tony Wareham.

His dam, Fascinator, was out of Sister Rose, a mare purchased by Daphne at the John Dunlop dispersal sale.

In a particularly touching tribute, Tigbourne was named after Daphne’s former farm, ensuring that a name with such personal significance continues to be celebrated at the very highest level of showing.

Having previously claimed the HOYS title in 2024, Tigbourne’s return to the winner’s enclosure is another remarkable achievement for this talented British-bred hunter and his connections.

Sport Horse Breeding of Great Britain extends its warmest congratulations to Hannah Horton and everyone associated with Tigbourne, as well as all those who contributed to his breeding and early years.

A wonderful celebration of British breeding and the lasting legacy of a dedicated breeder.
