DOMESTIC ABUSE GETS A RED CARD!
As England continues its World Cup campaign, Notts Police & Crime Commissioner, Gary Godden, and Deputy, Angela Kandola, remind people that support is available for anyone affected by domestic abuse.

Major sporting tournaments can bring communities together, but, sadly, national research shows incidents of domestic abuse can increase during and after high-profile matches, particularly when England lose. Domestic abuse is never acceptable, whatever the score.

If you are experiencing domestic abuse, or are worried about someone you know, help and support is available across Nottinghamshire through specialist services:

In an emergency, always call 999.

COURIER FRAUD ALERT!
The over 70s have been targetted as courier fraud exceeds £21m in 2025. So, City of London Police are issuing a renewed warning to the public as courier fraud continues to evolve across the UK, with criminals using increasingly sophisticated and persistent tactics that are driving significant financial harm to victims.

New figures show reports increased by nearly 10% year-on-year, rising from 1721 in 2024 to 1891 in 2025. Over the same period, total losses climbed from £19.5m to more than £21m, with the average amount stolen per victim now standing at £15,311.08, underlining the significant financial harm caused by each offence.

A key feature of this threat is the disproportionate targeting of older people, particularly those aged 70 and above. This group makes up the majority of victims, with those aged between 76 and 96 alone accounting for around 62% of all reports.

Fraudsters often deliberately focus on older victims, exploiting trust in institutions such as the police and banks, as well as using pressure tactics, fear, and urgency to manipulate them into complying with instructions.

A growing trend identified in 2025 involves the use of jewellery and gold to carry out high-value frauds. In many cases, victims are persuaded to visit multiple jewellers to purchase expensive items over a period of time before handing them to a courier. This method often results in the highest amount stolen and can involve repeat victimisation, with offenders maintaining contact to extract as much money as possible.

How to spot the signs of courier fraud
Courier fraud typically begins with an unexpected phone call from someone claiming to be a police officer or bank employee. Victims are told their account is at risk or that they are assisting with an investigation, before being instructed to withdraw money, purchase items, or disclose sensitive information. A courier is then sent to collect the items such as jewellery, cash, bank cards and PINs. In reality, this is the work of criminals and anything handed over is lost.

How to protect yourself from courier fraud:
• Transferring money: your bank or the police will never ask you to transfer money to a safe account.
• Couriers: your bank or the police will never send a courier to your home to collect bank cards, cash, or other valuables such as jewellery.
• Check if it’s genuine: contact the organisation directly using contact details you know are correct, such as those on official websites, the back of your card, or by calling 159 for your bank.
• Caller ID: don’t trust the Caller ID display on your phone - it’s not proof of ID.
• Report suspicious calls: you can report suspected scam calls by sending a text to 7726 with the word ‘Call’ followed by the caller’s number.

If you think you have been a victim of fraud, contact Report Fraud on 0300 123 2040 or via the website: reportfraud.police.uk

POLICE WARNING AFTER THEFTS AT CASH MACHINES
Notts Police is encouraging people to be extra vigilant following a spate of thefts involving cash machines. Four victims have been targeted in recent weeks resulting in losses of over £10,000.

A man in his 70s was targeted May as he used a cash machine inside a branch in Beeston. He had completed his cash withdrawal but had not yet removed the bank notes or card from the machine.
He was then approached by two men, who told him he had dropped a £10 note. Unbeknown to him at the time, his bank card was swapped as he was distracted. Reports then came in that his actual bank card had been used on numerous occasions in different locations, totalling a loss of over £6000.

The second incident, also in May, happened at a cash machine in Mansfield. A woman in her 70s again reported being distracted after she was told she had dropped some cash on the floor. In the confusion that followed, the woman's actual card was taken and used, with transactions now totalling over £4700.

Fraud and Cyber Protect Officer Dale Richardson said: “An investigation into these incidents is underway and, due to the similarities between the occurrences, it is likely they are linked. We are pursuing multiple lines of inquiry and are doing everything we can to find those responsible, while offering support and advice to the victims as they seek to apply for their losses to be refunded.

“In the meantime, we are encouraging the public to be vigilant when using cash machines. Whenever possible, use a cash point located inside a well-lit bank branch or retail store. Cover your PIN and keep an eye on your card at all times. Remember to put your cash and card away instantly once the transaction is complete and ignore any potential interruptions from strangers.

Anyone witnessing anything suspicious should contact Nottinghamshire Police on 101.

COMMUNITY CLEAN-UP – GIVE THE VILLAGE SOME SUMMER SPARKLE!
Join parish councillors on Saturday 18 and/or Sunday 19 July, between 10.00am–12noon, for a community clean-up of local council spaces, including round the Library, the community garden at the far end of the old school field, and Jubilee Garden on the High Street. Or play parks, green spaces, road signs, bus shelters, etc.

This is a drop-in event, so come along at any time, lend a hand, and help us keep our shared spaces looking their best. Every little effort makes a big difference! Bring your own gardening gloves and whatever gardening/cleaning implement you wish to use: there will be weeding, trimming shrubs and trees, and sanding down wooden seats to do (amongst other things).

Can’t make it to the main sites? You can still take part by clearing an area near your own home as part of this community-wide initiative. Let’s work together to create a cleaner, greener place for everyone. All ages welcome – bring friends, family, and neighbours! Pictured is a parish councillor cleaning a street sign at a previous community event.

RESIDENTS INVITED TO SHAPE THE FUTURE OF TRENT VALLEY
Residents living in the Trent Valley area are getting the chance to make sure their voice is heard on the future of the region.

‘Know Your Place Trent Valley’ aims to give people living in the area the chance to say what matters most to them both now and in the future, as plans for redevelopment and related projects move forward at the former power stations at West Burton, Cottam, and High Marnham.

It is a joint project led by Bassetlaw District Council covering communities either side of the River Trent, including eastern Bassetlaw and parts of West Lindsey, Newark and Sherwood, and North Kesteven.

People are invited to share their priorities, concerns and ideas about their local area throughout the engagement period, which runs until 31 August 2026. In Misterton, the Know Your Place team will be at Misterton Gala - so go along and have your say.

Mayor of the East Midlands, Claire Ward, said: “The Trent Valley has a vital role to place in the future of the East Midlands, with the potential to become a nationally significant centre for clean energy, innovation, and investment.

“It is essential that local communities help shape that future. Through our support for the Trent Supercluster Partnership, we are funding this engagement work to ensure residents have the opportunity to share their ideas, priorities and aspirations for the places where they live and work. I encourage everyone to get involved and have their say.”

For those unable to get to the Gala (or other engagement events throughout the summer), there is an online response form.
The project is being delivered on behalf of the Trent Supercluster Partnership, funded by the East Midlands Combined County Authority (EMCCA) which has identified the Trent Valley as a key component of its spatial and economic development strategies.
