🏠 HOW MUCH HOUSING IS ACTUALLY BEING PROPOSED AROUND HERSHAM?

We’ve been looking at the individual housing developments being proposed or approved around Hersham and Walton, but it’s only when you put them all on one map that you really start to see the bigger picture.

The team here at https://hershamvillage.co.uk have now created an interactive map showing the major developments, where they are, how many homes are being proposed and their current planning status.

At the moment, the schemes we are tracking represent around 1,371 potential new homes and units around Hersham, with the number of additional homes at Whiteley Village still to be confirmed. (https://hershamvillage.co.uk/housing-developments-around-hersham/)

And that’s on top of development that has already taken place. The former Birds Eye site added 375 homes and the former Rydens School site another 296, meaning those two developments alone have already delivered 671 homes locally. (https://hershamvillage.co.uk/housing-developments-around-hersham/)

We’ve also included Moore Place Golf Course in Esher, up to 206 homes, and Chippings Farm / Fairmile in Cobham, up to 650 homes, separately on the map because, although outside Hersham, developments of that size could still place additional demand on some of the same roads, schools, health services and wider infrastructure. They are not included in the 1,371 figure. (https://hershamvillage.co.uk/housing-developments-around-hersham/)

This isn’t about saying that no new homes should be built. It’s about asking whether the cumulative impact of all this development is being properly considered.

What happens to our roads and traffic? Do we have enough school places, GPs and dentists? What about water supply, sewage, drainage and public transport?

Rather than looking at every development in isolation, have a look at the map and see the overall picture for yourself.

Concern has been raised about the proposed new footway alongside Burwood Road, including its width, proximity to fast-moving traffic and the open surface-water ditch.

If you haven’t already looked at the latest proposals for the Hersham Golf Club site, now may be a good time to do so.

The approved scheme concentrated around 200 homes within a residential development area of approximately 5.5 hectares. The latest masterplan appears to increase the residential development area to around 23 hectares, more than four times larger than the area approved previously.

Whilst no housing numbers have yet been published, the significant increase in land allocated for residential development raises important questions about the scale of development now being considered. Based on the area shown on the latest plan, it would not be unreasonable to suggest that the site could have the potential to accommodate somewhere in the region of 700 homes, subject to density, layout and planning considerations.

The purple boundary on the attached plan highlights the proposed residential development area.

With the consultation events now having passed and limited detail currently available online, residents may wish to review the proposals carefully and seek clarification on the level of development being envisaged for the site.
