If you haven’t already looked at the latest proposals for the Hersham Golf Club site, now may be a good time to do so.

The approved scheme concentrated around 200 homes within a residential development area of approximately 5.5 hectares. The latest masterplan appears to increase the residential development area to around 23 hectares, more than four times larger than the area approved previously.

Whilst no housing numbers have yet been published, the significant increase in land allocated for residential development raises important questions about the scale of development now being considered. Based on the area shown on the latest plan, it would not be unreasonable to suggest that the site could have the potential to accommodate somewhere in the region of 700 homes, subject to density, layout and planning considerations.

The purple boundary on the attached plan highlights the proposed residential development area.

With the consultation events now having passed and limited detail currently available online, residents may wish to review the proposals carefully and seek clarification on the level of development being envisaged for the site.

A planning case has been submitted to Elmbridge Council concerning the redevelopment of land at Burhill Kennels in Hersham.

See our recent newsletter: https://hershamvillage.co.uk/positively-hersham-hersham-hounds/

Wimbledon Greyhound Welfare say this relates to an Environmental Impact Assessment screening request linked to the potential demolition of the existing kennels and the construction of a housing scheme.

Burhill Kennels is not just a piece of land. It is a sanctuary where retired racing greyhounds arrive frightened, uncertain, and exhausted — and learn that their next chapter can be kind.

If redevelopment proceeds, that sanctuary could be lost.

The 2 sites that are causing considerable concern are adjoining parcels of land on Green belt. One site is on the corner of Burwood Road and Turners Lane, known as the Ashill site. The other site is on the adjacent Kennels land on Turners Lane, known as the Castlemere site. Both sites are so named after the developers who are promoting the schemes.

Christmas Eve today reveals another major threat to the high performing Hersham Green Belt.

Developers have submitted an application to determine whether an Environmental Impact Assessment is required on the Greyhound Kennels land in Turners Lane with the stated aim to submit a planning application to develop the site with 90 dwellings. The planning reference is 2025/3343 and can be see here http://bit.ly/3KN6R0p

This announcement is hard on the heels from the one month public consultation, including the Christmas and New Year period, of the proposed development of land south of 133 to 147 Burwood Road with 66 dwellings.

BOTH SITES ADJOIN EACH OTHER with the cumulative development proposals amounting to 156 units. It is not known if the two sites are being promoted as a joint enterprise.

Hersham Community Group is as concerned as thousands of Hersham residents. We will be undertaking a full review early in the new year and will be communicating accordingly. This is potentially an extremely emotive issue. Our remit is to work within the planning rules and regulations and we will advise accordingly but the voices of all Hersham residents and stakeholders will be vital.
