Security Colleagues Being Misused
Dear members,

GMB has received multiple reports from security colleagues across ASDA stores highlighting serious concerns about how security staff are being used and managed. These practices are unacceptable, unsafe, and in some cases may breach both ASDA policy and legal requirements.

Security Colleagues Used for Non-Security Roles - Security colleagues are repeatedly being asked to carry out duties unrelated to their security role. This is a major concern because:

• It compromises the overall security of the store
• It leaves the store without proper coverage
• It shifts pressure onto non-security colleagues who are not trained to deal with theft, confrontation or safety incidents

Security exists for a reason. When you are pulled away from your post, everyone is put at risk.

Breaks Being Compromised - We have also been informed that security colleagues are:

• Not being given their full breaks
• Being told to “find their own cover”
• Expected to manage break cover when they are the only security colleague on shift

Breaks are a legal entitlement, not an optional extra.

We will not allow security colleagues to be stretched, misused or placed in unsafe situations. Security colleagues deserve respect, proper breaks, and the ability to carry out their role without being pulled in every direction.

Tracking Your Every Move.

Dear members,

You are aware that Asda have for some time been able to track and follow you whilst driving a home shopping van. This includes the use of CCTV fitted to the vans.

Asda’s systems also automatically flags up when a van goes off route, if a van repeatedly stops at a certain location, if a van takes extended breaks along with reporting on driver style.

If any of the above requires Investigating Asda are likely to refer to the vehicle’s CCTV footage.

The CCTV does not include a driver facing camera however as you are aware there are cameras located on the front wings / mirrors which do capture some footage within the cab.

This could result with evidence being seen relating to: -
 Va**ng within the van, which is a breach of policy.
 Smoking within the van, which is a breach of the law and policy.
 Seatbelt not being used.
 Mobile phone being used whilst in charge of the vehicle.

The above can result with an allegation of Gross Misconduct and could result with dismissal from the business.

GMB want to raise awareness to all drivers to ensure that there are no unnecessary allegations and investigations.

Be Mindful: Everything You Do Within A Home Shopping Van Is Tracked.

Abuse Of Flexibility Policy

Dear members,

We are seeing a growing pattern of Asda management abusing the Flexibility Policy, misusing it to pressure colleagues into unreasonable changes, with no proper consultation or process being followed. This is unacceptable, and it must stop.
The Flexibility Policy was never designed to ignore your personal circumstances, childcare commitments, second jobs, or caring responsibilities. Yet too often, managers are:

 Forcing through shift changes without proper meetings
 Ignoring the need for representation at flexibility discussions
 Disregarding valid personal and family responsibilities
 Quoting “business needs” with no transparency or justification

Let’s be clear, Flexibility works both ways – not just when it suits management.

 Your rights matter.
 Your voice matters.
 Your union stands with you.

If you’ve been affected by changes to your hours or feel pressured into accepting unfair shifts, contact your GMB rep immediately. We will not allow policies to be twisted and used against hardworking colleagues.

Together, we push back. Together, we hold them accountable.

GMB – YOUR RIGHTS TO REPRESENTATION

Colleagues
As colleague and manager numbers continue to decline within ASDA, we are seeing more and more meetings being arranged at short notice.
Colleagues are being pushed or pressured to undertake meetings without a GMB rep being present.

YOU HAVE A RIGHT, WITHIN POLICY, TO HAVE YOUR GMB REPRESENTIVE PRESENT WITHIN: -

• Investigation Meetings
• Disciplinary Meetings
• Grievance Meetings
• Welfare Meetings
• Return to Work Meetings
• Appeal Meetings
• Performance Meetings
• ANY OTHER INFORMAL OR FORMAL MEETING

If a GMB representative is not present at the time of the meeting you can postpone the meeting for up to 7 days.
GMB’s advice to all members is to INSIST upon having a GMB Representative present within ALL informal and formal meetings so that policy is followed and that you are supported correctly by a trained GMB representative.

If you are impacted by this issue and would like support or advice, or you are seeking assistance on other matters, please contact our office directly at 01603 626492, or visit our GMB Members’ Support Centre at www.gmb-asda.com/support

Twilight replenishment!

Dear members,

Since the introduction of twilight replenishment there has been many myths regarding twilight replenishment. Some managers feel it is right to make up their own policies which impact the work of our replenishment teams.

To clarify these myths, we feel the following will be informative: -

Myth Truth
Case rate / aisle planners must be achieved
WRONG, the case rate is a wage planning tool which ASDA House have confirmed is not accurate. As such it is not to be used to manage colleague performance.

Twilight / night colleagues are to do split down on the shop floor
WRONG, the split down is NOT to be undertaken on the shop floor and should be completed prior to the twilight operation starting.

Powered pump trucks can be used to bring out pallets before 9pm. WRONG, powered pump trucks can ONLY be used between the hours of 9PM and 8AM.

All cardboard and plastic should be placed / thrown on the floor while stock is being worked.
WRONG, no plastic or cardboard should be placed on the floor. Your twilight marshal should bring you cages to put rubbish in and take the full ones away.

Stock should be laid out on the floor in front of the bay where it is to be merchandised. (Spotting.)
WRONG, spotting is not allowed under any circumstances. No stock should be placed on the floor.

Colleagues must not leave the store until stock is worked.
WRONG, this is forced labour and would breach your contract of employment and the modern-day slavery act. You can leave the store at your contract finish time.

15% COLLEAGUE DISCOUNT

Dear members,

GMB strives to improve terms and conditions for GMB members working within ASDA.

For many years ASDA have stripped away pay and terms & conditions for colleagues working in the business.

It is not a good advert when Colleagues working within ASDA found it cheaper to shop in other retailers, even with their 10% discount.

However it is good to see that ASDA have finally seen senses and made a decision to increase the colleague discount from 10% to 15%.

This is a direct result of years of campaigning by GMB Union.

It is a step in the right direction however there is a long way to go to improve pay and terms & conditions for ASDA workers.

The colleague discount card is one of the major benefits to a colleague working within ASDA and can provide substantial savings upon your weekly shop.

This increase in colleague discount is applicable to all ASDA colleagues including those who retain their discount card for life.

Please seek advice if you are unsure upon the terms of use for the discount card as misuse will cause disciplinary issues.

MAKE XMAS SAFE. THINK AND PLAN AHEAD!

Dear members,

GMB want all our members to have a Merry Christmas and make it a SAFE Christmas.

It's the time where work colleagues, family and friends come together to celebrate the Christmas spirit.

It’s a time to drink, party, be with loved ones and a time to enjoy yourselves.

While you are at work we do not want you to be thinking:-
• Was I safe to drive?
• Am I safe to work in store?
• Am I putting myself and others in danger?

It is not worth it. THINK and PLAN ahead.

Drink and drugs can:-

• Slow your reactions.
• Make you feel over confident.
• Increase the chance of accidents.
• Cost you your driving license.
• Lose you your job.
• Ruin your relationships.

Don’t Drink To Excess Or Take Illegal Drugs Prior To Working A Shift.

Stay Safe And Enjoy Your Christmas!

There has been a worrying rise in reports of people resorting to loan sharks recently.

It is surprisingly easy to fall victim to the activities of a loan shark. They use underhand tactics and often prey on those in vulnerable situations.

This is our reminder to members to avoid dealing with lenders who contact you through unexpected methods such as cold calls, emails or via social media 📵

A WIN FOR LOWESTOFT WOMEN

Dear members,

Our GMB Stewards in ASDA Lowestoft have recently succeeded in securing FREE Hygiene products for our female colleagues in the Staff Toilets.

This is huge win for our female colleagues.

Prior to this our female colleagues needed to purchase and provide these products at their own expense.

The store reps organised a petition where a majority of the members signed to inform the management team that they were not happy that basic care and consideration was missing from the store where something as simple as hygiene products were not being provided by Asda for the female colleagues.

A meeting with the Asda store management team was set up and it was mutually agreed, and hygiene products will now be available free of charge in the rest rooms

GMB LONDON REGION FEEL THIS IS A GREAT SUCCESS AND SHOWS A GOOD RESULTION ACHIEVED BY ASDA AND GMB.
