The Met Office has issued a Yellow warning of Rain and Snow for Pennine areas. The warning area is more focused on the western parts of Calderdale, particularly higher ground. That’s us!

This warning carries a medium likelihood of low impacts and is valid from midnight tonight until 7:00pm tomorrow evening. Unfortunately the morning commute time is when it’s likely to be at its worst.

Potential impacts include:

🚂Some roads and railways likely to be affected, with longer journey times by road, bus and train - so be prepared
🪫Some interruption to power supplies and other services - so charge up your power packs and have a charged up torch handy just in case
💦Spray and flooding on roads likely to increase journey times - please drive carefully through pooling water
🏠Flooding of a *small* number of homes and businesses is possible

Of course, it will also be slippy under foot and cold so be sure to look after yourselves and look out for each other.

⚠️Flooding is possible from the afternoon of 14 December 2025 until the morning of Tuesday 16 December 2025.⚠️

We are currently under flood alert with the chance that this may progress to a flood warning overnight.

Since the ground is already waterlogged and there is prolonged rainfall due throughout the night with some very heavy downpours due there is a chance of flooding. The situation will depend on which side of the hill these heavy deluges of rain fall which is currently too early to predict. As we know, things can react very quickly in this valley so it pays to be prepared.

Please therefore put flood doors on if you are leaving your property overnight. If you are staying home then ensure that you are ready to implement any flood resilience measures (eg making sure the way to flood pumps are clear) and take any other measures that are part of your resilience plan. Please also share this information with those at flood risk who are not on Facebook.

There is also likely to be a lot of surface water on the roads overnight so please drive carefully to keep yourselves and others safe, including when driving close to properties.

Currently the river levels are due to peak at around 4am.

Stay safe x

A flood alert is in place for our area tomorrow.

Since the ground is waterlogged this is something that we do need to take seriously. That said, due to the nature of our valley these things can be hard to predict in advance and much will depend on where the rain falls. In some places in the country it is predicted to be intense. It’s therefore best to be prepared especially if you may be away from your property.

The EA has forecast high river levels throughout the morning may lead to flooding.

Flooding is possible on 01 December 2025 from approximately 0600 with further rainfall expected.

The Environment Agency will be monitoring rainfall and river levels and will update us tomorrow at 9am or before then if needs be.

If you’ve got a flood plan make sure you’re ready to put it into place eg charging mobile phone batteries, getting medication in place, making sure that pathways to your cellar pumps or flood barriers aren’t full of junk.

Stay safe and hopefully this will not become anything more.

Here’s a piece by Andrew Entwistle, our Lead Flood Warden:

Recently, erroneous claims have appeared regarding the Environment Agency (EA) proposed use of Calder Holmes Park during the construction of the Flood Alleviation Scheme (FAS).

Allow me to explain: firstly, if the EA are unable to find another site, Calder Holmes Park is the reserve site, not the first choice.

It is wrongly intimated that the EA will be given the use of the park at an advantageous price. This is incorrect as Calderdale Council will treat the EA as they would any other contactor requesting the use of council land. This means the EA will be required to pay a commercially viable rate to the satisfaction of auditors. Indeed, the Council are required to charge a commercially viable rate for the use of the park.

Secondly, there are other cogent reasons for agreeing the use of an alternate site, not least being the weight restrictions governing the use of the canal bridge and carriageway along Station Road which is limited to three or three and a half tons. To overcome this restriction will require the construction of a temporary bridge overlaid across the existing bridge and carriageway at some considerable expense, not only to install but later to remove and reinstate the original roadway; not a cheap process.

Thirdly, the Council will require the reinstatement of the park with its football pitches, roads and pathways to the satisfaction of we residents; again, not a cheap process.

Therefore, taking all of the above into account, hopefully one can understand why the EA and its contractor prefer wholeheartedly to find and lease another site to be used during the construction of the scheme.

The planning and infrastructure bill is due to be discussed in parliament again this week

Many of us are concerned about large infrastructure projects being built on protected peatlands. One aspect of this which concerns us is that healthy peatlands slow the flow of water down into the valleys. We would rather see these landscapes restored rather than built upon.

The Government's England Peat Action Plan (2021) states that "re-wetting peatland areas and returning them to their natural state could make a significant contribution to achieving our targets on reducing carbon emissions, as well as having other benefits for water quality, nature and flood mitigation."

Although we need wind farms in order to tackle the climate emergency which increases the risk of flooding, there are better sites than protected peatland.

We want the government to amend its Planning & Infrastructure Bill to: 1. Ban wind farms on peatland in the National Site Network and SSSIs in England, and 2. Require the restoration to good conservation status of peatland’s interlinked mosaic of habitats, including irreplaceable blanket bog.
