Hi-jinks on the Southern Oceans!
Ian Worley has sailed all his life and in late 1976 grabbed the chance to enrol as a watch leader, later promoted to 1st Mate, on the 78ft maxi racing yacht GREAT BRITAIN II for the forthcoming 1977/78 Whitbread Round the World Race.
Ian completed the race and whilst doing so filmed for the BBC sports programme GRANDSTAND. With a colleague he later made a film of his experiences which they sold to United Artists to accompany the James Bond film Moonraker.
Ian’s talk, richly illustrated, takes the audience on a voyage, racing around the world, encountering storms and accidents, icebergs and whales and a lightning strike in the depths of the southern ocean. He has also sailed oceans with his young family but that's a story for another evening!
Join us at the Baptist Church, Polestub Lane, Cuckfield, on Tues 20 January, 7.30pm to find out more about Ian's adventures and join us afterwards for refreshments. Tickets are £5.

Over centuries animals have been called on to support us in wars and conflicts. Historians estimate tens of millions horses, mules, donkeys, dogs, cats, pigeons and canaries perished in the First World War alone. There are stories of animals sacrificing their lives for the good of humans yet their sacrifice in the main goes unnoticed and unrewarded. We take them for granted but call upon them to support us when we need their help. The War Horse Memorial is a national and Commonwealth monument erected to remember the service and sacrifice of animals caught up in the conflict of World War One. It has evolved to be much more and from it we have resurrected the purple poppy, used decades ago to symbolise the role that animals played – and continue to play – in war. By the sale of pin badges and knitted poppies for pets we are able to support horse and animal welfare organisations today. Join us as Susan Osbourne tells us more about this wonderful organisation on 21st October at Cuckfield Baptist Church, Polestub Lane, Cuckfield. 7.30pm. Tickets are £5 and join us for a cup of tea or coffee and cake afterwards.
