Shalom House Palliative Care Centre

Shalom House Palliative Care Centre Pembrokeshire Hospice at Shalom House's aim is to provide care for people with a cancer and other life limiting illnesses.

Shalom House supports the people of Pembrokeshire, providing holistic, accessible, personalised care for those who have been diagnosed with cancer and other life limiting illnesses, such as MND, Parkinson’s and COPD. We are here to support people through a difficult time and to help provide a better quality of life. Shalom House was the vision of Margaret Burnett MBE and Elizabeth De Guise. Elizab

eth donated her house to Margaret to develop as a hospice for the local community, opening in 2007. It is thanks to Margaret’s determination and Elizabeth’s generosity that Shalom House exists. The name Shalom was chosen as it means peace and a feeling of mental and physical wellbeing. When you come into Shalom House you are met with a spirit of warmth and light, which unites patients, family and staff and is inclusive to all people,

This has been a hard week for all of us, knowing that Shalom House’s services are coming to an end. This is something we hoped we would not have to face.

But as difficult as this moment is, I also want us to hold onto something very important — the incredible difference that has been made here, and the kindness that has filled this place from the very beginning.

To our team — thank you. You’ve faced every challenge with courage, professionalism, and compassion. You’ve cared for people and families at their most vulnerable moments, and you’ve done it with such dignity and love. You have truly been the heart of this hospice.

To our trustees, thank you for your guidance and dedication. I know how hard you’ve worked to try to keep us going — exploring every option, every possibility — and your commitment has always come from a place of deep care and responsibility.

To our amazing shop volunteers — thank you for everything you’ve given. Your time, smiles, and dedication have made such a difference, turning every sale into care and comfort for others. Though our charity is closing, your kindness and commitment will always be remembered with gratitude. 💜

To our house volunteers — you have given your time, your energy, and your hearts. You’ve sat with attendees, made cups of tea, offered smiles, and given comfort when words simply weren’t enough. The warmth you’ve brought to this place has meant more than you’ll ever know.

To our volunteer drivers - Your kindness, reliability, and generosity made an incredible difference—ensuring people were able to access our services. Thank you for every mile, every smile, and every act of service.

To those that have supported us through fundraising or offering their services or just general support - thank you for standing by us. Your generosity, encouragement, and belief in our work have made everything we achieved possible

As Business Manager, I’ve seen first hand how much effort has gone into keeping this hospice running — the fundraising, the countless behind-the-scenes tasks that no one ever sees, but that make all the difference. Every single person here has played a part in making this place what it is — and that’s something to be proud of.
It’s heart breaking that we’re closing, yes. But the truth is, what we’ve built here doesn’t end today. The care, the compassion, and the community we created — that lives on in the people we’ve helped, in the families we’ve supported, and in each of us as we move forward.

We’ve brought comfort, peace, and dignity to people when they needed it most. That is an extraordinary thing. And no matter what happens next, no one can ever take that away.
So, from the bottom of my heart — thank you.

Thank you for your dedication, your kindness, and your belief in what we did. It has been an honour to stand beside you all, and to be part of something so deeply meaningful.

Though this is a goodbye, the spirit of this hospice — the love, the care, the humanity — will continue wherever we go next.
Thank you, everyone. Sam

We would love to see you.

We appreciate all the support and donations made to the shops over the years. Understandably we are no longer accepting donations in either shop.

Could we please ask that you also do not leave donations outside the shop,

This is the final 100 Club draw results.

Thank you everyone for your support over the last few years. Every penny we have received has helped Shalom stay open as long as it has.

I will be contacting as many people as possible to cancel any direct debits or to arrange a refund for those that have paid for the year.

Thank you all again.

It is with a very heavy heart that we announce the closure of Shalom House Hospice in St Davids, which has served the whole of Pembrokeshire for many years. Sadly, ongoing financial difficulties and a lack of sustainable funding mean we have no alternative but to close at the end of October 2025.

As many are aware, like so many small charities across the UK, Shalom House has been under severe financial pressure for a long time. Our Save Shalom House campaign received a wonderful response from the community and other benefactors, which allowed us to continue offering our care for far longer than we could ever have imagined. Despite this, we have now had to take the very sad and difficult decision to close our doors.

We would like to express our heartfelt thanks to the people of St Davids and the wider Pembrokeshire community, who have supported us so generously over the years.

In particular, we want to acknowledge our dedicated clinical staff, volunteers, and administration team, all of whom have worked tirelessly and with such compassion to provide an excellent service for those in need of palliative care across Pembrokeshire.

We are also deeply grateful to all those who have donated, organised fundraising events, shopped with us, and supported our charity shops. Your kindness and generosity have given us precious extra years of being able to keep Shalom House open and serving the community.

Though this is the end of Shalom House, we will always be proud of what has been achieved here and the difference it has made to so many lives.

Our Story

Shalom House opened its doors in 2007 after a decade of fundraising in Pembrokeshire led by Margaret Burnett MBE, our founder trustee. Starting with Day Care one day a week this has developed today into the Palliative Care Unit offering Day Care Monday through to Friday.
