Hastings Kelp Project Join us as we work together to bring the coastline back to life - one kelp forest at a time.

A community-led marine conservation initiative focused on researching and restoring kelp ecosystems along the Sussex coast through science, diving and environmental collaboration. The Hastings Kelp Project is a grassroots, not-for-profit initiative dedicated to restoring and rewilding the local coastline to create thriving marine habitats and support biodiversity. Our mission is to nurture healthy kelp forests and marine ecosystems off the Hastings coast, enhancing nature’s resilience and fostering a richer, more balanced environment for wildlife and communities alike. Through community involvement, scientific research, and hands-on restoration, we aim to protect and regenerate our precious marine life, raise awareness about ocean conservation, and inspire action for a healthier planet.

⚓️ BOAT UPDATE ⚓️

Unfortunately, this summer our survey boat has had some issues… which means it is no longer seaworthy. This has put a hold on our diving research for the time being.

At the moment, we are trying to raise funds for a new & improved HKP research vessel! This would allow us to pick up where we left off, and continue surveying off Rock-a-Nore shore, Hastings.

🌱❗️LAB UPDATE!!❗️🌱

This weekend we are stripping back the WHOLE system in order to replenish and clean it up with fresh, nutrient rich water. All tanks are being stocked with extra wave pumps to help replicate ocean movement. We are also doubling up the pump systems and increasing the baseline light across all 10 tanks.

ALSO, next week we are expecting a very exiting delivery of Laminaria Digitata (Oarweed) sorus which will be split across the different tanks with the current sugar kelp!

As the sugar kelp has grown so well, we will be beginning volunteer open door Saturday LAB WORKSHOPS where experts, scientists and marine biologists can come and get involved, discuss ocean conservation and build a community!

The Hastings Eco Conference is an amazing gathering for the many initiatives, community groups and organisations working in the green sector in and around Hastings and Rother.

The day will hold discussion groups, feedback sessions, highly valuable networking opportunities and keynote speakers - one of which will be our very own Hastings Kelp Project Founder, Chris Williams!

Some amazing FREE Hastings Commons workshops going on today and Monday with the University of Cambridge!

🌊 Living Coastlines – Sunday 28th June, 11am–2pm
🌳 Parks Workshop – Monday 29th June, 10.30am–1.30pm

The sessions involve guided walks, storytelling and discussion about how local people experience the coast, parks and climate change to support important research.

✨ All ages welcome
♿ All routes are wheelchair accessible
