Hastings Kelp Project

Hastings Kelp Project Join us as we work together to bring the coastline back to life - one kelp forest at a time.

A community-led marine conservation initiative focused on researching and restoring kelp ecosystems along the Sussex coast through science, diving and environmental collaboration. The Hastings Kelp Project is a grassroots, not-for-profit initiative dedicated to restoring and rewilding the local coastline to create thriving marine habitats and support biodiversity. Our mission is to nurture healthy

kelp forests and marine ecosystems off the Hastings coast, enhancing nature’s resilience and fostering a richer, more balanced environment for wildlife and communities alike. Through community involvement, scientific research, and hands-on restoration, we aim to protect and regenerate our precious marine life, raise awareness about ocean conservation, and inspire action for a healthier planet.

If anyone is free this Saturday 20th June…

Standing up for Nature would love to welcome you on a fun packed day to celebrate our local waterways!
11am - Starting with new Mayor Paula Warne opening the event at the Stade Hall
11.30 - our two walks with local ecologists and experts begin, one from the playing field in Harold Rd next to Dudley Infants and one from the Pump House Cafe in Alexandra Park.
The children have been working with Radiator Arts to make some beautiful dragonfly models for the parade and everyone is welcome, especially in watery themed costumes!
At the Stade Hall we have ecologists from Rye Harbour Nature Reserve with hands on activities exploring real life aquatic species, Clean Water Action Group, RNLI, Surfers against Sewage, Sea Change, St Mary’s Care for Creation and interactive and immersive visual trip down the Bourne and many more family activities and informative displays.
2pm - local folk band Square Peg will be playing watery songs and Helena Dollimore MP will be dropping in too around 2.30.
Check out our interactive map and add your own memories and knowledge.
It’s all free and it’s all fun packed and educational.
Let’s feel the love for our waterways 💙

Happy World Ocean Day 💙

What better a day to celebrate the critical importance of kelp to our coastlines.

This year’s WOD theme is ‘Strong Marine Protected Areas for Our Blue Planet’, supporting the global push to protect 30% of the ocean by 2030.

Here in Sussex we’ve nearly hit that target, which is great news for our kelp. The challenge now is to ensure these marine protected areas are effectively managed and actually driving marine recovery.

Swipe to find out why kelp is worth fighting for 🌿

🌊 Volunteer Update – Exciting Times Ahead! 🌊

Thank you all for your patience and continued support! We know it’s taken some time to get everything in place, but establishing the diving and laboratory infrastructure has been crucial to laying the foundations of the project.

This setup is key for moving into Phase 2, where we can fully bring all you amazing volunteers into the heart of the project. The time is almost here, and we are very close to the next stage!

We truly appreciate every single offer to help. Please know that no one has been forgotten, just a little more time and we’ll be ready to dive, grow and restore together.

2026 is shaping up to be an incredible year for our oceans, wildlife, the planet, and Hastings. We can’t wait to work with this community through science, education, and outreach, restoring our oceans side by side.

Thank you for being part of this journey! 💙
