Harrow Street Pastors

Harrow Street Pastors The church on the streets

We are usually on patrol from 10:00 to 04:00 on a Friday or Saturday night to care for, listen to and help people who are out on the streets. We are led by our local coordinator and we also have support from local churches and community groups in partnership with the police, local council and other agencies.

Refection Galatian 6:2 (NIV)
2 Carry each other’s burdens, and in this way you will fulfil the law of Christ.

Dear Lord and our Father you know our needs before they are spoken, before they enter our minds and come into our life. We thank you that you know them before they reach us and you map out the journey ahead for us to cope and overcome them. We give you thanks and bring them before you as a sign of humility and submission to your will. We give thanks for all you have provided. We bring before you our prayers and thanks:

- We pray for those who are homeless during the heatwave to stay hydrated and sheltered. We pray for wildlife to remain safe and unaffected by the heat and increased human interaction.
- We pray for youth and student unemployment to decrease and for the young people to get opportunities to enter the job market. We pray dear Father they do not get discouraged by rejections or the slow jobs market.
- We pray for C’s friend D who has gone into respite care. Lord may he find comfort and good care and we pray for his wife K who cannot go to the home with him to know your presence during this separation.
- Heavenly Father we pray for rain following this dry spell so the plants and ground can be replenished. We thank you for the sunshine and all the goodness and warmth it has brought us allowing nature and wildlife to flourish and display its splendour.
- We thank you for the alpha course that has just finished at WBC. We pray for all those who attended to continue exploring the scriptures and to come to Christ if they are not yet Christians.
- We pray for the new Bible course starting at WBC, for good attendance and for those attending to find faith and know Jesus for themselves.
- We pray for the children and the people who have drowned during the hot spell. May their souls rest in peace and we pray protection for children going out to swim in lakes and rivers to stay safe while keeping cool. We give you thanks and pray for the emergency workers who have had to deal with these difficult situations not to be affected by what they have witnessed.
- We give thanks for the wonderful lives of A and N who went home to be with their heavenly Father. We pray for their families to be sustained by the happy memories and joyous times they spent together during this sad time.
- We give you thanks heavenly Father for families and friends who shared and celebrated V's birthday making it a memorable and enjoyable time.
- We pray for V’s appointment with the consultant, for a correct diagnosis and treatment to be carried quickly and successfully.
- We pray for S's hospital appointment to go as planned and for an accurate diagnosis and treatment.
- We pray for confidence and calmness for all those taking exams that they would remember everything they have revised and prepared and get the results they need.
- We pray for dog owners to be careful when walking their dogs, to do so during cool periods and be mindful of their welfare.
- We pray for all those who are severely impacted by this hot weather, namely the elderly, the disabled, travellers and children and anybody who is unable to care for themselves. We pray that caring neighbours, relatives, friends and social services will keep an eye out for them.
- Heavenly father we also pray for those who are consuming alcohol in this hot weather to remain safe if they are unable to control or moderate their drinking.
- We pray those who are celebrating Eid or other festivities to be mindful and considerate of their neighbours when using fireworks and loud gatherings.
- Dear Father we acknowledge the changing weather patterns are an indication of human impact on the world. We pray God that you will remain in control of the weather patterns and you continue to provide all that we need in terms of rain, heat, cold and everything that we need for the world to continue to survive.
- We pray and give you thanks for the joy and companionship pets bring us leading to discovery of new walking routes and parks.
- Loving Father we pray for the miners to be found and rescued in Thailand, for the Ebola disease in the Congo to come under control, for the infections to drop and the spread to stop and a vaccine be discovered quickly to help the afflicted and those living near its origins.
- We pray for the conflict between Israel and her neighbours to cease and for peace, security and protection for all the people who are leaving under constant bombing and destruction.
- We give thanks for the successful return of the March for Jesus that was well attended with the wonderful fellowship and uplifting worship and praise by speakers. We pray those who witnessed and cheered the procession will believe and know Jesus is still King of our country and the world.
- We pray for train and transport services to remain unaffected by delays during the hot spell. We give thanks for all those who operate the services under very stressful conditions.
- We pray for J's husband who is going to hospital for cataract and glaucoma investigation. We pray the investigation will be successful and relieve the pressure in his eyes.
- We pray for a street pastor J whose mother is in hospital to make a quick and full recovery.
- We pray for A’s church as they conduct street evangelism, may passersby hear and seek to connect with the church, read tracts and bibles that will be distributed. May they be anointed and be blessed by the word and truly seek Jesus.
- We pray for Hatch End Baptist church to continue its steady growth, for more children and youth interest and willing helpers and teachers to volunteer.
- Almighty God we pray for peace in the world, for peacemakers and mediators to arise and end the wars and conflicts that are affecting so many countries around the world.
- We pray for sister B on her passing. We pray for W's blood pressure to return to normal, for C's radiotherapy to proceed safely and successfully. We pray for all who have departed to know your eternal peace and rest.
- We pray for the people of Kent to have their water restored. We pray for MZ to be treated successfully for cancer and dementia affliction to slow down.
- We give thanks for C who has found employment and pray the verification process be completed quickly so he can commence work.

Lord in your grace and mercy, hear and receive our prayers. All this we pray in your name and in the loving name of our Saviour Jesus Christ. Amen

John 7: 37 – 38 (NRSV)
On the last day of the festival, the great day, while Jesus was standing there, he cried out, ‘Let anyone who is thirsty come to me, and let the one who believes in me drink. As the scripture has said, “Out of the believer’s heart shall flow rivers of living water.”

Miracles happen not just when something thought to be supernatural occurs but when God is experienced to be present in whatever happens.
Shortly, the team will leave for their patrol. Two of the members of the team will carry on their back bulky and heavy rucksacks. Bulky because they contain what we expect to need on the patrol. Heavy because the bulky items include bottles of water.
Then the miracle begins. As the patrol progresses through the late hours of the night into the early hours of the morning and we become more tired and less able to cope with heavy loads on our back; the rucksacks become lighter.
As encounters are experienced, items from within the rucksacks are given away: gloves, socks, hats, wet wipes, cereal bars, lollies, information cards; but they are not heavy. Also given away are those heavy bottles of water.
Whether we are rich or poor, whether we have a home to call our own or not; we all need water for our life. We need water to keep hydrated. We need water to clean ourselves and our wounds. We need water to sober up when we have overdosed on alcohol or drugs.
So, the water we carry is in high demand. Everyone needs it.
When we give it away, it not only lightens the load on our backs enabling us to carry on; it also offers life to those who receive it enabling them to carry on too.
In that act of giving what we have; God is experienced to be present and not just one but two miracles happen.
But the miracles do not end there. Because what we have to give, we have been given by God and what we give away from what is now ours is more than a gift from us. It is a gift from God.
At this moment, we do not know what will happen on this patrol. It may be quiet. It may be eventful. There may be few opportunities to give what we have and we may end the patrol feeling frustrated that what we had to give we have not been able to. There may be many opportunities and we return with empty rucksacks but feeling fulfilled.
Whatever happens, a miracle will have happened because whatever does or does not remain in the rucksacks, however many encounters we do or do not have, God’s Spirit is given to us wherever we are.
Our presence on the streets of Harrow and Wealdstone is made possible because the gift of God’s Spirit has been received by us and is in our hearts. It enables us to live the life we live.
Our presence on the streets of Harrow and Wealdstone brings with it, God’s Spirit; a gift of life given not just to and for us but, through us, for everyone wherever they are, whatever is happening, and to experience that, perhaps, is to experience the greatest miracle of all.

Prayer requests
• Thanks for a calm night with people enjoying the opportunity to socialise outside.
• For B and the man found sleeping in Wealdstone that ways can be found to communicate with them and that they can obtain the help they need.

Acts 1:12-14 12 Then the apostles returned to Jerusalem from the hill called the Mount of Olives, a Sabbath day’s walk from the city. 13 When they arrived, they went upstairs to the room where they were staying. Those present were Peter, John, James and Andrew; Philip and Thomas, Bartholomew and Matthew; James, son of Alphaeus and Simon the Zealot, and Judas son of James. 14 They all joined together constantly in prayer, along with the women and Mary the mother of Jesus, and with his brothers.

This passage underscores the unity and faithfulness of Jesus’ followers in the period between His ascension and Pentecost. Their prayerful waiting exemplifies trust in God’s promises and readiness to receive divine guidance, setting a model for Christian community life and spiritual discipline.

Prayer – Lord, we thank you for your mercy and grace through Jesus Christ’s sacrifice. We acknowledge that we will experience challenges on our spiritual path and in a world full of uncertainties, grant us the skill of patience that we can also stop to see its beauty and wonder.
As we patrol today, we ask that you continue to walk with us and guide us in being patient for action and answers. Being ever faithful that you are present at our every encounter to offer your comfort and Good News promise.

Prayer requests:
• The homeless lady we gave water to.
• B and his positivity about Street Pastors; that he had a good night despite being turned away from the pub.
• K, that she gets the help she needs with food and her Universal Credit Application.
• M and his ongoing issues with homelessness. That God would guide him to a way out leading to better days for him.
• P, who appears to be spiralling with Mental Health issues but still seems to want to do good.
• The confrontational gentleman; that God might soften his heart and reveal who he is to him.
• The Albanian gentleman who was asleep then was emotional. That he got home safely and that he can resolve the situations that lead him to where he was.
• For the super prayer power, prayer and street pastor together.
• For each other, that we continue to grow in faith.
• F – That they continue to progress positively
• C – For understanding to move forward
• Harrow’s beggars and homeless who were evidently missing from their usual spots today, that they are safe and that they find a positive solution to their individual situations.

We thank you and praise you for all your goodness to us this past week.

• We pray for our own local councillors as they make adjustments resulting from recent elections.
• May our own national political scene resolve as calmly and swiftly as possible.
• We pray that common sense and integrity for the greater good of humankind, will take priority in the minds of all leaders, national and international. May peace be at the forefront of all.
• We remember all those going through difficult times adjusting to infirmities and reduced mobility. Give carers the patience to encourage and sustain mental and physical changes in those they care for.
• We remember all those who have recently died, C’s friend K, and we ask that you are there for his family as they grieve the loss of a much loved husband, father and grandfather.
• We remember all those students currently taking GCSEs and A Levels and pray that strain and stress for them and their families do not impede their studies.
• We rejoice that WBC have restarted Ladies’ Breakfast events. May this be a time of renewed fellowship.
• We thank you that holidays can be so enriching giving not only rest and relaxation but the opportunity to have new and exciting experiences.
• We are grateful that operations such as cataract removals to give new sight are available and are so life enhancing.
• We rejoice that C starts his new employment very soon and we think of all those still searching for work. May they not be discouraged but continue with hope.

We bring these written prayers and the unspoken ones in our hearts before you in the knowledge that you are there for each one of us.
Amen

Ecclesiastes 9:11-18
11 I have seen something else under the sun:
The race is not to the swift
or the battle to the strong,
nor does food come to the wise
or wealth to the brilliant
or favour to the learned;
but time and chance happen to them all.
12 Moreover, no one knows when their hour will come:
As fish are caught in a cruel net,
or birds are taken in a snare,
so people are trapped by evil times
that fall unexpectedly upon them.
The above verses very much reflect the situations we see and meet in the streets during our patrols. People have fallen on difficult times and face hard circumstances that they may not have foreseen and prepared for. This is a situation can affect any of us regardless of our stable circumstances or wisdom we may possess. Wisdom is of immeasurable value, yet is often invisible, ignored and forgotten. Life is unpredictable and human effort, strength or intelligence does not guarantee success
Wisdom Better Than Folly
13 I also saw under the sun this example of wisdom that greatly impressed me: 14 There was once a small city with only a few people in it. And a powerful king came against it, surrounded it and built huge siege works against it. 15 Now there lived in that city a man poor but wise, and he saved the city by his wisdom. But nobody remembered that poor man. 16 So I said, “Wisdom is better than strength.” But the poor man’s wisdom is despised, and his words are no longer heeded.
17 The quiet words of the wise are more to be heeded
than the shouts of a ruler of fools.
18 Wisdom is better than weapons of war,
but one sinner destroys much good.
We, the Street and Prayer Pastors are like the poor wise man, Harrow is a small place facing huge problems. Our efforts help make a small dent in those problems. We are often not seen and sometimes ignored especially by those whose life is comfortable. Our combined wisdom gives hope to a lot of people who face a challenging time. Many may not remember or know us but those that we assist remember and are appreciative. It teaches us wisdom is superior to strength or weapons but often undervalued and ignored. The passage highlights that while a quiet, wise life is better than noisy folly, one sinner can destroy much good.
We give thanks for:
• M if he was offering genuine help to D
• Fast police response to the incident
• The people who see us and appreciate our work
• D for caring for M
• Cctv for their support during the incident
Pray for:
• D, that he was not being exploited and he gets help and support he needs to leave the streets
• M, not to be exploiting vulnerable people
• The man stabbed, not to be seriously injured
• His attacker to reflect on his actions
• The two young men who witnessed the attack to go be good Samaritans to those in distress without placing themselves in danger
• Lady in the mobility scooter, be calm and willing to engage with us
• Lady carrying clothes and her back
• Gentleman at the bus station to find the help he needs
Great Father Love, Reality of existence from Whom we all emanate, and in Whose care we all live; Your servants the Harrow street pastors come before You with the following prayers:-
With our sister Al.(1) we give You thanks on his 100th birthday for the life and works of Sir David Attenborough who has brought the glory of Your natural world so well into our lives. We also give thanks that her daughter, R., has helped so much with her garden and pray that she will soon recover from the back injury she suffered in doing so; and we give thanks for the recent good weather and the enjoyment of our gardens. We bring before You her friend S. who continues to suffer. We pray for her swift recovery and relief from her suffering. With her we also pray for our country during this fluctuation in our political landscape to greater extremity.
With our sister J.B. we give You thanks for the satisfactory results from her tests at Hospital; and we bring before You the family of her co-parishioner, C., whose sister is very ill, leaving C having to travel long distances regularly to look after their elderly mother. We pray for Your comfort, strength and healing for them all at this time. With her we also bring before You the state of Your world at the moment due to the activities of the enemies of peace, naming particularly Iran, America, Israel, Ukraine, Sudan and all other places of horror and violence. We pray for Your intervention and that Your peace will be brought swiftly to these lands.
With our sister V. we give thanks for the N.H.S. and for the m.r.i. tests she was able to have at Hospital. She asks us to pray for her previous co-parishioners whom she met there, K. and M. We pray Your comfort, strength and healing upon them. We pray for J.'s family (whose mother's funeral was on Friday.) that You will bring to mind many happy memories to comfort them. We give You thanks for the recovery of our new volunteer from St. Anselm's. With her we pray for Your strength and comfort for all Your Jewish people in the U.K. who will be feeling insecure at this time; and for all our S.P. colleagues who have caring or health issues at the moment; and with her we also pray for teachers and others in schools who have responsibilities to look after youngsters during the holidays; and for students and families in the fraught exam-results time. With her we pray Your comfort upon J. and J. and upon D. and B., our wonderful hosts from H..B..C. , who are now having to cope with great changes in their lives.
With our sister C.G. we pray for those who have lost their lives due to the hantavirus out break on the cruise ship, that You take them swiftly to Your close presence and that You bring Your comfort to their loved-ones. We pray Your comfort on the frightened victims who are presently having to self-isolate. We pray also for those who have lost the refreshment of much-anticipated holidays due to the world situation or their own health; and we pray for all the disappointed ex-councillors, families and campaigners
With our brother P. we give thanks for the Royal family, particularly for King Charles, anointed in Your name, who has recently displayed such masterly diplomacy for peace and the care of Your world; and for Prince William in his recent support of Sir David Attenborough. With him we also pray, at this time of political upheaval, that our politicians, particularly those in the newly-popular extremes, will learn integrity and service of the community rather than self- party- and sectional-service.
With our sister H. we pray that the N.H.S. will be able to provide her with a timescale to help her with her back problem so that she can plan for the future.
With our brother R. we pray for all the new councillors and representatives in England, Wales and Scotland and for the outgoing ones.
With our sister Au. we give You thanks for Your answer to our prayers in respect of a friend's son.
With our sister M.F. we give thanks for the life of her friend, who reached 87 years of age and who has always been very faithful to You. With her we pray that proper tests will be undertaken for R.S. and for the family. We pray for the swift recovery of G.L. and for peace and comfort for the Jewish community at this fraught time.
With our sister Al. F. we pray particularly for the employment and economic futures of all those leaving school now due to the new world economic situation.
We make these prayers to You, Forgiving Father, the only way we can, through Your Saviour Son and guided by Your Holy Spirit of Love Amen

1 Peter 2.2-10

“Like newborn babies, crave pure spiritual milk, so that by it you may grow up in your salvation, now that you have tasted that the Lord is good.

As you come to him, the living Stone – rejected by humans but chosen by God and precious to him – you also, like living stones, are being built into a spiritual house to be a holy priesthood, offering spiritual sacrifices acceptable to God through Jesus Christ. For in Scripture it says:

‘See, I lay a stone in Zion,
a chosen and precious cornerstone,
and the one who trusts in him
will never be put to shame.’

Now to you who believe, this stone is precious. But to those who do not believe,

‘The stone the builders rejected
has become the cornerstone,’

and,

‘A stone that causes people to stumble
and a rock that makes them fall.’

They stumble because they disobey the message – which is also what they were destined for.

But you are a chosen people, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, God’s special possession, that you may declare the praises of him who called you out of darkness into his wonderful light. Once you were not a people, but now you are the people of God; once you had not received mercy, but now you have received mercy.”

Colin lead a short reflection regarding both Biblical and modern-day hero’s and their flaws, pointing out that being human, we all have flaws and that God can use us anyway. But likewise, being human and having flaws we should seek Gods help and guidance to overcome them so they don’t overshadow or taint the good God can do through us. He gave examples of Martin Luther King jr, who was both a champion of the civil rights movement and a womaniser, of Leo Tolstoy whose unyielding perfectionism woven into his radical faith isolated him from his family and friends and thus what should be life giving became stifling and the very recent example of Mike Pilivachi, whose flawed character and safeguarding breaches has forever tainted Soul Survivor ministries for many despite it being where they found their faith. He also gave the example of Henri Nouwen as someone to follow; whose flaw was loneliness, insecurity, and a hunger for approval, but who rather than let these hold him back or taint his character, was open and honest about them, offering them to God each day and through that vulnerability and honesty, enabled others to be equally honest and vulnerable and get the support they needed. It is the paradox of Gods Kingdom that strength comes through weakness, as ultimately and supremely displayed by the sacrifice of Jesus.

Colin ended with a prayer which he invited others to make their own “Create in me a clean heart O God. Renew a loyal spirit within me. Do not banish me from your presence and take your Holy Spirit from me. Restore me to the joy of your salvation, and make me willing to obey you (Psalm 51:10-12 - NLT)

Prayer requests:

• For Street Pastors with ill members of their family, for Gods healing and protection over them
