Christmas Singing By Heart THIS THURSDAY 4th December at South Harrow Baptist church commencing at 2pm.

This group is for those living with dementia and their carers. All welcome!

The power of music, especially singing, to unlock memories is an increasingly key feature of dementia care as it seems to access parts of the brain that remain unaffected by the progression of dementia.
‘Singing By Heart’ uses a mixture of secular and religious songs which span the decades. Every song is introduced by a relevant scripture verse and concluded with a prayer. The sessions are designed to encourage communication, recollection of memories, and fun for those taking part. It is also hoped carers will find the sessions beneficial through enabling time for them to relax, make friends and share experiences.
If you know anyone who would benefit from these sessions please let them know!!

After 12 years of distributing The Salvation Army papers (War Cry and Kids Alive), making hundreds of connections with people in the local community of South Harrow, visiting some in their homes, attending funerals of those he got to know and sharing prayer with many, David has now retired!!

We held an event on Sunday where numerous people attended, including some of his Thursday regulars, and David was presented with a certificate of appreciation. After his final Thursday the staff at Costa, presented him with gifts recognising all the years he has been a part of this community.

You may still see him around as he knows and chats to so many, but he won’t have the papers!

Today, Founders’ Day, we celebrate the work of co-founders Catherine and William Booth.

Starting from humble beginnings, William and Catherine moved to London’s east end, raising their eight children. In 1865, a movement called ‘The Christian Mission’ was born and flourished, teaching the good news of Jesus in a relatable way. All were welcome.

Over time, the organisation adopted military-style titles and uniforms designed to publicly demonstrate a commitment to God. Today, the same spirit of putting belief into action in those early days carries on. As William Booth said:

“While women weep, as they do now, I’ll fight; while children go hungry, as they do now I’ll fight; while men go to prison, in and out, in and out, as they do now, I’ll fight; while there is a poor lost girl upon the streets, while there remains one dark soul without the light of God, I’ll fight, I’ll fight to the very end!”

Happy Founders’ Day, Catherine and William Booth ❤️

The Salvation Army is 160 years old this week 🎂

In July 1865, William Booth preached to crowds outside the Blind Beggar pub in East London, starting a movement called ‘The Christian Mission’. By 1878 it became known by the name we call it today, The Salvation Army.

This week, we celebrate 160 years of church, charity, worship, homelessness support, residential support, addiction support, international development, emergency response, anti-human trafficking, modern slavery response, education, healthcare and justice response and more.

P.S. We'll also be celebrating our 160 year history with the whole nation on 13 July on a special episode of Songs of Praise. What story would you share? ❤️
