📚 Disasters are eroding the future of the next generation.

Climate-related extreme events are a clear and present threat to learning, enrolment, and future prospects of students.

📈 These impacts are both direct – in the form of school closures – and indirect, restricting access to education and learning readiness. The World Bank provides 4️⃣ concrete ways in which governments can protect education systems:
🤝 Managing education for resilience
🏫 Building resilient school infrastructure
📝 Ensuring learning continuity in the face of climate shocks
🧑‍🏫 Leveraging students and teachers as change agents

Children with better education are better able to prepare for, cope with, and recover from shocks in the future. 💪

🎉 Congratulations to Madiun City, Indonesia, recipient of the “Adapting and Mitigating Climate-related Crises: Building Heat Resilience and Preventing Flood-related Health Risks” award.

Madiun’s SUPERMIE initiative brings climate adaptation, waste management, food security and public health into one community-based environmental governance model. The approach has reduced flood-prone hotspots and contributed to measurable improvements in environmental quality and health, while being adopted by 15 other regencies/cities in Indonesia.

The 2026 WHO Healthy Cities Recognition Awards will be presented at the 11th Global Conference of the Alliance for Healthy Cities in Sydney, Australia, 1–3 September 2026.
