Environment Hailsham is a group of volunteer residents filling the town with flowers

02/10/2026

I think we woke up Mr Fox at the polytunnels this morning. He declined to stay for a close up. Our volunteers split up today to:
Do more deadheading in town
Tidy up & put down woodchip in the town centre & the Library Garden
Mow at HQ
Work in the Dennis King Memorial Garden
Then we all returned to HQ for a welcome cup of tea.

One of our volunteers particularly likes to work in town deadheading the floral displays. Last time she counted & deadheaded 940 times! 🏅

If you follow us you will know that we had a large tree down at HQ recently. Removal is going to take a little while. Our last volunteer session saw 🪚(ha ha) us removing the smaller branches to make access clearer & safer. The warm wet weather means its time to be looking out for fungi.

We've had some volunteer sessions cancelled recently as we had tree down at our HQ. Luckily no one was injured.
Yesterday we were able to hold our AGM & reflect on our work over the last year. We are very proud of our achievements & contribution towards making Hailsham a more pleasant place to live & visit by 'filling the town with flowers' as well as our maintenance work.

Who has spotted this year's rogue? Do leave us a wave in the comments if you have! 👋 We've had an unexpected white bloom pop up in an all pink display before but this is a new one on us!!! 🤣

Our volunteers spent this morning working in the Dennis King Memorial Garden where we were closely supervised by Robin. Our volunteer sessions are Tuesdays & Fridays 10-12 & we would love to hear from anyone who would like to join us. Please contact us at [email protected].

Today's session was spent tidying up at both HQ & the Dennis King Memorial Garden. This is a snap of some of our chaps having a post work cuppa & a laugh. Although primarily gardening is what we do, we have a range of experience, a mixture of skills & other roles within our team that support us to function as a charity. Several members of the team work extremely hard outside of the sessions to ensure we can fill the town with flowers. If you would like to help then we would love to hear from you!

Another volunteer session today that saw our team divided between HQ & The Dennis King Memorial Garden. However we all got together at the end for a welcome cup of tea. We are a friendly supportive group & volunteering is definitely much more than just gardening (although we like to do that too!) Next session Tuesday 10-12. If you would like to give volunteering a try then come along to a session at the polytunnels off Grovelands Road or contact us at [email protected]

Our team of volunteers were able to return to work yesterday & finish off the planting in the town. Once established our displays should look even more beautiful.
