Zen in the Art of Archery by Eugen Herrigel

This book has done a great deal to bring Kyudo into the attention of the west.
Written about the author's experiences of learning kyudo under a well respected teacher, (Kenzô Awa), in the 1920's it was first published in 1948.
It has introduced many to the aspects of kyudo that may not seem obvious from a superficial viewing of kyudo in action and is a good insight into its art and practice.
It is still available, (on Amazon for instance), for a very reasonable price. The electronic version is available for usually less than a £1 and it is still at a low price as a paperback.

Yasaka-jinja Shrine Otabisho.
The image displays traditional Japanese guardian figures, known as Zuijin, often found at the entrances of Shinto shrines.

As a means of personal growth, Kyudo is more than simply a form of archery. The regime of practise requires the use of etiquette to train attitude and behaviour. In becoming more open minded, the practitioners cultivate sincerity that gives vitality to the shooting and has meaning for their lives.
