aims to help the reopening of the narrow gauge railway between Sibiu and Agnita in Transylvania

How it all Began

Interest in revival of the Sibiu Agnita Railway was started by The Mihai Eminescu Trust with Jessica Douglas-Home pressing to preserve the local way of life in parts of Transylvania. This awareness of the possibility of revival was picked up by local railway enthusiast Mihai Blotor who formed a Friends group, which became known as the ‘Friends of the Mocanita’. The Mayor of Agnit

a, Radu Curcean, became involved and lent very active and enthusiastic support. The action was now taken up by NEHRT (New Europe Heritage Railway’s Trust) under the chairmanship of London railway lawyer Stephen Wiggs, who, together with Frank Cooper, visited the area to see if official enthusiasm could be encouraged. They found a great deal of scepticism and little support. Meanwhile Bill Parker of The Flour Mill in the New Forest added his passion for steam and, importantly, funds. Spurred on, Mihai and The Friends organised a steam event in Agnita to celebrate the line’s centenary in 2010 to which the Great and the Good of railway preservation turned up, including an assortment of British enthusiasts. On the flight back to the UK and unwilling to let matters rest, they pondered the question of forming a supporters group. It was one of those ‘good ideas’ that sometimes first see the light of day by chatting over a pint in the pub! A General Meeting was arranged in Birmingham and SARUK was born with the aim of supporting our Romanian colleagues in their ambitious task of reopening the railway.

Another trackwork week approaches!
We are planning to head over to Sibiu for the last week of March. The dates this spring are Saturday 21st to Sunday 29th.
I hope we can muster more that two volunteers for the week, let's get out there and help to make a real difference!
There are several trackwork opportunities. The extension towards Cașolt, maintenance of the track between Cornatel and Hosman, or even foliage clearance around the NG depot in Sibiu.
There will also be opportunities to be involved in less hefty work, including under cover if the weather decides to delay the arrival of spring!

A round up of the SARUK members activities over in Romania during the recent (dis) organised spring volunteer working visit.
The next organised working party visit will be the 20th to 28th September 2025, but that doesn't mean you cannot visit the railway before then to enjoy a ride on the trains, or to offer individual volunteering support. There's plenty to get involved with!

It has been quite an adventure for SARUK, but an idea conceived last year has come to fruition and sufficient work has been carried out (just about) to be able to take a locomotive across the level crossing at Cornatel and onto the Vurpar branch.
There's a lot more work to do in the future if we are to build on this momentous step. Please drop us a line if you'd like to come along for the next planned working week and join in on the latest railway adventure!

And here we are, carefully driving onto the last available track panel south of Cornatel station. Some serious trackwork is needed to progress south of here.
(But it's only some spot resleepering and new fixings and fishplates and rapid progress can be made.)
