Did you know Roseberry Topping hasn't always looked like that? β°οΈ
That famous half-cone shape β the one people compare to the Matterhorn, and not bad for North Yorkshire β isn't natural at all.
Back in 1912, a geological fault, likely made worse by centuries of alum and ironstone mining underneath, caused part of the original summit to collapse. What was left is the profile we all know now: the one you can pick out from miles away, the one that tells you you're nearly home.
So the most recognisable landmark on our skyline is, in a way, an accident β and a reminder of the mining history that shaped this whole area.
