Friends of the Hurtwood Friends of the Hurtwood is a charity managing public access to The Hurtwood. Friends of the Hurtwood manage the public access to an area known as 'The Hurtwod'.

The Friends of the Hurtwood secure the funding and support required to maintain this beautiful area for the benefit of the public. Comprising 3000 acres of woodland and heathland, making it the largest area of common land in Surrey.

We have recently had 2 instances of deliberate fire starting in the Hurtwood!

After a long period of hot weather the Hurtwood is exceptionally dry and the risk of fire breaking out is incredibly high. This is a huge risk to people, wildlife and property.

In this area fire can take hold underground in the earth where it can spread invisibly coming to the surface some distance away and hours later, long after the main fire has been extinguished.

Please do not light fires in the Hurtwood!

If you see any signs of fire, deliberate or otherwise, please call the fire brigade as soon as you can and follow up with a message to Mark, our ranger

This year we’re celebrating our centenary! 💯

It is 100 years since Reggie Bray and Ralph Percy the
(eighth Duke of Northumberland) dedicated The
Hurtwood to the public – giving us all access to walk,
ride and cycle over the most special 2000 acres in
walk, ride and cycle over the most special 2000
acres in the south of England.

Thank you all who came to our centenary event on Holbury hill and thank you all who continue to support us!

Please note that the track from Holmbury Hill road up to the cricket pitch will be closed for resurfacing from week commencing the 9th February for three weeks. Horses and cyclists may need to find an alternative route, but access on foot should still be fine though. Thank you.

Please note, commencing 20th January-27th January, bridleway 179 that runs from The Aldermoor up the hill will be closed for repair work by Surrey rights of way team. There'll be a considerable amount of vehicle movements on the hill (marked in blue) and the bridleway (marked in red) Thank you 🙂
