Keeping the planet buzzing at Penrith Library.
During the last two weeks, Penrith and District Beekeepers have had a display in Penrith Library to draw people’s attention to the threat of the Yellow Legged Asian Hornet, a devastating predator of honey bees and other pollinators. On the reverse of these panels there was information about honey bees and the role of beekeepers. Last Saturday afternoon, families were invited to a presentation and activities about ‘The World of the Honey Bee.’ Bee suits were available for children to wear, they could also try printing with hexagonal blocks to see if they could make the shapes tessellate in the ways that the bees do when they build their wax cells. People enjoyed tasting honey and trying to match up the flavour with the correct picture of the flower from which the nectar had been derived. Everyone enjoyed learning more about the bees which help to keep our planet buzzing! To arrange for a presentation or display in your local community complete the enquiry section on the Penrith & District web site: www.penrithbeekeepers.org

The Yellow Legged Asian Hornet is an invasive insect which is threatening the survival of bees and other pollinators across Europe and the UK . A display at Penrith library, available until 12th March, provides information about honey bees and how you can help to combat this existential threat. On Saturday 7th March at 2.00.p.m. beekeepers will lead an activity session for adults and children. This will include a free honey tasting. Buzz along to the library to find out more!

It was a lovely Cumbrian rainy day for our annual honey extraction day. Much of the honey remains solid in the frames and will be fed back to the bees. The small amount of honey extracted will be sold at Apple Day, Hutton-in-the-Forest on 29th September. Don’t forget if you are a member of PBKA and would like to sell your honey or other bee related products to contact Margaret.

On 16th August a group of Penrith & District Beekeepers visited Lowther Honey Company which has 500 colonies based in different locations in and around the Eden Valley. The tour was led by Josh Frazer, Head Beekeeper to the Lowther Estates. Josh explained how he has be replacing queens from locally bred bees, the process of cleaning and repairing the huge quantity of hive equipment, minimising waste by sterilising and re-using dadant frames, balancing the welfare of bees with the need to make a profitable honey crop, the logistics of moving bees around and minimising the threat to other bee and pollinator populations. It was a fascinating tour and we were impressed by Josh's energy and enthusiasm and his willingness to candidly share with us his experience of being a commercial bee farmer and the challenges that he faces in this role on a daily basis.

This summer, a group of Young Carers from the Eden area were invited to come along to the Acorn Bank Apiary, accompanied by two members of Eden Carer staff. The session was led by two PBKA Members , and a PBKA apiary manager who supplied an observation hive for the children to take a closer look at bees. In the main drawing room of the house the children were introduced to the defining features of bumblebees, solitary bees and honey bees and their life cycles. They sorted silk flowers into those that were/ were not ‘bee friendly’, tasted different types of honey and made wax candles. This was followed by taking a walk through the gardens where the children were encouraged to spot bee friendly flowers and watch the bees gathering pollen and nectar. The trail led to the apiary where the children could see the bees entering and leaving the hives. On the way back to the house, they were provided with kits to help them to safely catch and identify different types of bumble bees. At the end of the day, the children were given a bag in which to carry home their candle and information cards about the Asian Hornet 🐝🌞🌼🐝
