🐝 A Week of Community Beekeeping Sponsored by CTR Secure Services 🐝

This weekend we finished a fantastic week of sponsored community apiary sessions with visits to St Nicholas Church, Bradwell on Saturday and Brian's Secret Garden, Ludham today.

Despite some challenging weather throughout the week, we were able to spend time with the bees, support volunteers, share beekeeping knowledge, and keep our community apiaries active across Norfolk and Suffolk.

A huge thank you to CTR Secure Services for sponsoring all five sessions this week. Their support has helped us continue providing free community beekeeping opportunities, hands-on learning, and community connection through our apiaries.

We really appreciate your support. 🐝

Serious question disguised as a not very serious post:

What would you like to see more of from us?

A. Bee facts
B. Behind-the-scenes apiary photos
C. Beginner beekeeping tips
D. Pollinator garden ideas
E. Volunteer stories
F. Videos from the hives
G. Jamie being made to explain things on camera
H. More bee puns, even though society has suffered enough

Comment with a letter.

This helps us make the page more useful, more interesting, and slightly less like we’re shouting “bees!” into the void.

🐝 Community Beekeeping at A.C.E CIC 🐝

The weather got the better of us today, so instead of opening the hives, we spent the session covering beekeeping theory and general best practice with our volunteers.

While we'd rather be with the bees, sessions like these are a great way to build knowledge and confidence ready for better weather.

A big thank you to CTR Secure Services for sponsoring today's session and supporting free community beekeeping opportunities. 🐝

What’s one thing you’ve always wanted to ask a beekeeper? 🤔

Not the clever question.

Not the polished question.

The real question.

Like:

Do bees recognise people?
Does the queen know she’s the queen?
How much honey is too much honey?
Can bees have a bad day?
Why do beekeepers always look so calm when surrounded by thousands of flying insects?

Drop your question below and we’ll answer some in future posts.

No judgement. We’ve heard worse. Probably from ourselves.

🐝 Community Beekeeping at St Mary Magdalene Church 🐝

Today's session at St Mary Magdalene Church looked a little different to our usual hive inspections.

With stormy weather continuing across the East Coast, we took advantage of a break in the rain to inspect both colonies, which are continuing to look healthy and make good progress despite the challenging conditions.

We also spent part of the session building frames for a new super, which will soon be added to one of our busier hives to give the colony the extra space it needs as the season develops.

It's always rewarding to see the colonies growing well and to be able to combine practical beekeeping skills with hands-on learning in the apiary.

A huge thank you to CTR Secure Services for sponsoring this week's community apiary sessions and helping us keep community beekeeping accessible across Norfolk and Suffolk.

🐝 Community Beekeeping at The Mayfly Cafe 🐝

The weather on the East Coast has been pretty challenging recently, with plenty of rain keeping both us and the bees sheltered more than we'd like. Thankfully, we caught a break in the weather today and were able to get out for a great community beekeeping session at The Mayfly Cafe.

Despite the conditions, both colonies are looking really healthy, have a lovely temperament, and are doing exceptionally well considering the amount of poor weather they've had to contend with over the last few weeks.
It was great to spend some time with the bees, check on their progress, and welcome people along for another hands-on community beekeeping session.

Would you try beekeeping?

Be honest.

Would you be:

A. Calm and graceful
B. Mildly nervous but pretending not to be
C. Asking 47 questions
D. Already walking backwards slowly

The good news is, our community apiaries are beginner-friendly. You don’t need your own hive, you don’t need your own equipment, and you definitely don’t need to know what you’re doing before you arrive.

That’s kind of the point.

We’re here to help people learn about bees, spend time outdoors, meet others and get involved at their own pace.

So, which one are you: A, B, C or D?

🌟 Volunteers' Week 2026 – Sundays are for Brian's Secret Garden 🌟

This week, we're celebrating the volunteers who make our community apiaries possible.

Every Sunday, our volunteers gather at Brian's Secret Garden in Ludham to care for bees, learn new skills and enjoy one of the most beautiful settings in our community apiary network.

As one of our newer apiaries, this site has quickly become a favourite among volunteers. Surrounded by nature, wildlife and growing spaces, it provides the perfect environment to slow down, connect with the outdoors and experience the benefits of community beekeeping.

From carrying out hive inspections and learning about bee behaviour, to helping improve biodiversity around the site, volunteers have played a huge role in bringing this apiary to life. The welcoming atmosphere and stunning surroundings make every session something special.

A special thank you to The National Lottery Community Fund, whose support helped make this apiary possible and continues to create opportunities for people to learn, connect and get involved in their local community.

To everyone who has joined us on a Sunday at Brian's Secret Garden, thank you. Your enthusiasm, support and dedication are helping create a thriving space for both people and pollinators.

Our project was made possible thanks to players.
