A message from Jamie, Cullen and everyone at Project Apis CIC

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our dear friend, mentor and fellow director, Samuel Jinks.

Sam was an integral part of Project Apis and helped shape both what we have become and what we hope to be going forward. More importantly, he was our friend. His humour, advice, support and company will be very deeply missed.

In one of the many conversations about bee-related nonsense that filled our meetings, we once spoke about the old beekeeping tradition of “telling the bees” the practice of informing the bees when something significant had happened, particularly when their beekeeper had died.

It was a tradition I never imagined I would have reason to think about myself.

Although Sam was usually much happier watching and heckling us than getting suited up and sweating over the hives, he was very much part of our beekeeping family. So today, we'll tell the bees about Sam.

Our deepest sympathies and love go to Gemma, Sam's family, his friends, and everyone affected by this horrible loss.

He will be very greatly missed.

🐝 THAT’S A WRAP FOR 2026! 🐝

Our community apiaries are now officially closed to the public for the season.

As autumn approaches, it’s time to give our colonies some space to prepare for winter. We’ll continue essential checks and treatments behind the scenes, before reopening our public sessions around April/May 2027. 🌸

And what a season it’s been...

🐝 2 community apiaries → 6 fully operational sites in ONE YEAR!

A huge thank you to every volunteer, host site, funder, supporter, business and organisation that helped make this possible. We genuinely couldn’t have grown this quickly without you.

And next year? We’re aiming even higher.

🎯 The 2027 goal: 10 community apiaries.

More bees. More communities. More opportunities for people to experience beekeeping completely free of charge.

🐝 The season is nearly over…

We’re heading into the last few weeks of our 2026 community apiary sessions, so if you’ve been meaning to come along and try beekeeping, this is probably the sign.

All of our community sessions are **completely free to attend**. No experience needed, no equipment needed, and no need to know anything about bees before you turn up.

We’ll provide the suits, the tools and the bees.

📍 Tuesdays – The Mayfly Café, Lowestoft
📍 Wednesdays – St Mary Magdalene Church, Gorleston
📍 Thursdays – A.C.E CIC, Gorleston
📍 Saturdays – St John’s Church, Great Yarmouth
📍 Saturdays – St Nicholas Church, Bradwell
📍 Sundays – Brian’s Secret Garden, Ludham

⏰ All sessions start at 12pm.

If you’ve been putting it off all summer, you’re running out of summer.

Come and have a go before the bees settle down for winter. 🐝

🍯 Another new place to find our honey!

We've just dropped off our first batch of Project Apis CIC honey at Yarmouth Meat Traders in Great Yarmouth, who are now stocking our jars in store.

We're always grateful when another local business is willing to give us shelf space and support what we're doing, so a massive thank you to the team at Yarmouth Meat Traders for taking us on as a local vendor.

Jars are £6 each, with the money from every jar going straight back into Project Apis CIC to help keep our community apiaries and free beekeeping sessions running.

So if you're already heading into Yarmouth Meat Traders, keep an eye out for our jars while you're there 🐝

Today's session at Brians Secret Garden was a special one as we did our first ever BSG honey harvest! 🍯

🐝 5 Traditional Beeswax Recipes — Part 1

Beeswax has been used in homes for generations, not just in candles, but in simple, practical recipes for skin care, furniture care, leather polish, and everyday household use.

Here are five old-style beeswax recipes we’ve been looking at:

1. Cold Cream
A traditional beeswax cold cream has a lovely old-fashioned feel. The beeswax helps give it body, while the oils help create a soft protective layer on the skin. It could be lovely for dry hands, outdoor days, and simple winter skin care.

2. Furniture Cream
A gentle way to care for wooden furniture and bring back a soft, natural-looking shine. It could be good for tired tables, chairs, shelves, and older wooden pieces that need a little attention.

3. Waxing Furniture
Waxing furniture is a traditional way to show off the natural beauty of wood. A thin coat can help enhance colour, bring out the grain, and leave a soft polished finish.

4. Leather Polish
This beeswax leather polish could be useful for brown shoes, leather upholstery, and older leather items that need freshening up. It can help improve the look of worn surfaces and bring back a little shine.

5. Waterproofing for Shoes
A practical one for wet walks, garden jobs, and everyday outdoor life. Rubbed into leather boots or shoes, beeswax can help create a water-resistant layer and give footwear a bit of extra care.

Bees give us so much more than honey. Even a small amount of wax can be turned into something useful, long-lasting, and beautifully simple. 🌿

⚠️ Safety note: Some traditional recipes include ingredients such as turpentine, ammonia, or oils. Always use good ventilation, keep away from flames, follow safe handling guidance, and store carefully.

Today at our community apiary in Lowestoft at The Mayfly Cafe, we had the pleasure of hosting representatives from the East of England Cooperative who wanted to check out the work we have accomplished with their help.
