Information from Bedford Borough Council
As you’ll already be well aware, the temperature is rising. An Amber is currently in place, and a Red Alert for extreme heat across Bedford Borough has been announced for Wednesday and Thursday this week, with very high temperatures expected.
While many people enjoy the sunshine and will be making the most of our wonderful parks and open spaces, we know this kind of heat can be difficult, and even dangerous, for others. Please take a moment to check in on neighbours, friends or family members who may be more vulnerable, including older residents, young children, and those with existing health conditions.
A few simple steps can make a big difference, and you may wish to pass on this advice:
• Stay hydrated by drinking plenty of water throughout the day
• Keep homes cool by closing curtains during peak sun hours
• Avoid being outdoors in the hottest part of the day and stay in the shade where possible
• Wear sunscreen and protect your skin if you do go outside
If you’re out and about, please also think about others:
• Dogs and other pets can struggle in the heat - walk dogs early morning or later in the evening, and always check pavements before heading out
• Never leave children or pets alone in cars, even for short periods
• You may consider leaving water out for wildlife
• Open water might look tempting in this weather. If you know someone who may be tempted, please remind them to be careful, to avoid alcohol if swimming, and not to swim alone
Further information and advice for the heat and water safety can be found on the Linktree on our bio.
To help our collection crews, our bin collections will start earlier than usual, from 5.30am. This is to protect them from working in peak temperatures. Please put your bins out the night before where possible.
If you need a break from the heat, you’re welcome to use our cooler indoor spaces. The Higgins Bedford and our local libraries are open and provide a comfortable place to sit, relax, and cool down during the day. There is also a number of Welcoming Spaces offering somewhere cool across the borough, again, details can be found on the Linktree on our bio.
We understand that changes like earlier collections or service adjustments can be inconvenient, but these measures are in place to keep both residents and staff safe during extreme conditions, we thank you for your patience.
Let’s look out for one another and take care in the heat.
