Extinction Rebellion Gravesham

Last week, XR Gravesham & Dartford planted a tree in memory of one of our own, Stuart Stephenson. He was a dedicated climate activist and was responsible for setting up repair cafes in both Gravesend and Dartford. He was enthusiastic about DIY solar panels and also against nuclear weapons.

The tree is one of his favourites, a hornbeam. It is planted at Fleetway open space. Some bulbs have been planted around its base, which will hopefully burst forth with colour in the spring.

A fitting dedication to a wonderful human being. Thank you to all who came to pay their respects.

A mini farewell protest outside Barclays on Saturday. Barclays is closing it's Gravesend branch this week and we couldn't miss the opportunity to convince local users to switch to a more environmentally friendly and morally sound bank. One woman was walking into the bank to open an account and we convinced her to go elsewhere.

If you weren't aware, Barclays is the heaviest financer of fossil fuel exploration and extraction in Europe. It has recently announced that it will not provide finance to new oil and gas projects, but there are loopholes in their announcements, particulalrly in that it doesn't cover fracking.

Switching you bank account is easy, with all your direct debits and standing orders being moved automatically.

It is with great sadness that we have to announce the sudden loss this week of a friend and dedicated fellow Rebel, Stuart.

Stuart was involved with Extinction Rebellion Gravesham from the start back in 2019. He organised our monthly litterpicks, which were responsible for the collection of hundreds of bags of rubbish from Gravesend. He volunteered as a repairer at the repair cafe at the Tree Community Centre in Dartford, and helped to set up a new repair cafe at Northfleet Veteran's Club, due to start this Thursday 7th December.

Stuart was very passionate about environmental issues, particularly home made solar panels, and regularly attended council meetings to keep tabs on their progress to Net Zero.

On a more personal level, he was a kind, gentle, patient and passionate man who will be very much missed by all who knew him.
