Stokes Bay WI

Stokes Bay WI President’s Welcome
Welcome to Stokes Bay WI, founded October 2014. We hope to inspire (occasionally) and be inspired (frequently)!

We meet on the third Tuesday of every month, 10.00 – 12.00, at St Mary’s Parish Centre in Alverstoke. Although our membership is closed, please contact us by email if you would like to be added to the waiting list. We have a variety of speakers and activities planned for our Tuesday sessions, the main details of which are posted on our website. In addition, pending the easing of restrictions (2022

), there will be more events, diversions and outings. We happily embrace the ethos of the WI Federation and its dual interpretation of ‘inspiring women’. We return our votes on the shortlist of Resolutions each January and look forward to learning which one gains support at national level.

Skittles June 2026
We had such a lovely evening at the Crofton in Stubbington. It went so well there were a number of comments that the event was over far too quickly – well done Pamela!
It was quite competitive with Thelma delighted to win a bottle of Bucks Fizz. Even Jane with the wooden spoon b***y prize was happy!
We talked, we bowled, we ate together (stir-fry was a popular choice) and then bowled some more. There was no shortage of enthusiasm though bowling styles were varied from a ‘drop’ and hope it got there; a ‘throw’ that bounced along; to fierce bowling like a guided missile that rebounded off the back wall!
The evening ended with a super raffle raising £42!
It was another great opportunity to be together with friends and for our newer members to talk and bond with established SBWI members.
Thanks Pamela for organising us so well. We’re looking forward to next year already!

International Supper Club
June 2026
Darcey welcomed us with Prosecco and sparkling pomegranate and elderflower (for the drivers) served in coupe glasses with pieces of strawberry, and we were pleased to welcome Thelma’s sister Cynthia as our guest.
We had another fine variety of dishes with spicy buffalo chicken wings and hummus and flatbreads from Jenny, a chicken curry from Thelma which was served with wild rice. This was followed by a Japanese ramen from Darcey which contained pork belly, boiled egg, mushrooms, noodles and pea shoots all swimming in rich broth made from scratch to an authentic recipe.
The most impressive recipe though was Jan’s dessert which was a jiggly Japanese soufflé cheesecake served with fresh berries and double cream. I’d looked at the recipe when I was doing the research and decided that it was a far too complicated for me to tackle as the batter had to be made by melting the cream cheese, butter and milk together and then blending in the flour before adding in beaten egg whites. The whole thing gets cooked in the oven in a Bain Marie and you have to have the oven door open during part of the process. Jan’s a much braver cook than I am!
I made a couple of recipes from Jordan Ma’amoul a type of spiced date filled biscuit made with semolina rather similar to a fig roll and Ghraybeh which is a type of shortbread. I don’t generally make biscuits so that was as far out of my comfort zone as I was prepared to risk.
Darcey’s poor husband was banished to the front room but he did get to try all our dishes so hopefully he won’t have minded too much.

Coffee at a Garden Centre
June 2026 – Alver Valley
The first thing we said at our monthly coffee morning was ‘how can we be half way through the year already’!
We had one long table in Alver Valley Garden Centre’s café and, as always, the chatter was easily heard by other diners!
Plenty to talk about, as usual, with the weather – varying from beautiful sunshine to noisy thunderstorms – at the top of the list. A very British thing to do.
A few of us succumbed to tasty treats – their scones are enormous and so delicious!
Some of our new members were with us too and it’s a lovely way, in a relatively small coffee group, to get to know others.
We now have 100 members (our maximum) and a small waiting list. That’s a big crowd when you first arrive so our monthly coffee mornings have a purpose too!
Thanks Joyce for organising us.

Local charities were delighted with donations from Stokes Bay WI.
What better way can there be to raise money, than while having fun! That’s the way members of Stokes Bay WI fundraise – they enjoy quizzes, musical afternoons, fascinating speakers, jam and chutney making for the Michaelmas Fayre and challenges of all sorts as long as there are cakes, cakes and more homemade cakes during every event!
The way the charities are selected is as democratic as you would expect a WI to be. We have ‘hustings’ where members can suggest the charity of their choice and the benefits they could receive. Following that there is a vote of all members and we quite often choose TWO charities for the forthcoming year and that is what happened here.
For 2025-2026, members selected Rowans Hospice as one of their chosen charities, recognising the vital support it provides to adults living with life-limiting illnesses and to their families across the local community. The other charity chosen for 2025-2026 was Level-Up Gosport which helps young people who face additional needs to achieve their best potential.
Angela MacCallum from Stokes Bay WI said “It was great to meet the beneficiaries from the two charities at our AGM when members heard first-hand how much their fundraising would be of benefit. Each charity received £1728.50 from us.”
Lily Stokes, Community & Events Fundraising Assistant for Rowans Hospice, explained that the charity relies heavily on community support to continue providing vital care. With only 22% of its funding coming from the NHS, they must raise an additional £23,700 every day to maintain its services – something made possible through the generosity and fundraising efforts of organisations such as Stokes Bay WI.”
The charity Level-Up Gosport is dedicated to empowering young people including those with mental health challenges, anxiety or SEND (special educational needs and disabilities) helping members to form friendships, transition to independence and secure employment.
What great charities to support and we were particularly happy to support Freyja Press, our youngest member in Stokes Bay WI, who is part of Level-Up Gosport.

Your Committee – All Change! - 1st June 2026
All good things come to an end and we had ‘changeover’ at our AGM in May.
President Angela became a ‘backbencher’ and incoming President Tracey took over the reins.
We enjoyed the new dynamic of the first Committee meeting and getting to know each other as planning colleagues as well as friends.
Plans were made for the next meeting (Tracey’s first!) and lots of lovely ideas were shared for the following few months.
When the meeting was over the ‘old’ committee took Angela to lunch at one of her favourite restaurants to say thank-you for all she did.
I THINK I heard Angela say she might deliver her home-made cakes to our new Committee venue …!?
Thank you Angela for all you did and thank you Tracey for being brave as our new President. Your Committee is here to support you.

Lunch Club to Lakeside in Gosport
May 2026
Eleven of us gathered at the Lakeside Cafe in Walpole park for our monthly WI lunch.
It was the perfect location on such a gloriously sunny May day, with panoramic views from Haslar, across the park and around to Stoke Road, with the sun gleaming on the ponds as little model yachts competed for space with ducks and swans.
The food and hospitality were excellent as usual here.
The tables were laden with fish and chips, salads, baked potatoes and welsh rarebits.
Many thanks to Darcey and Thelma for organising.

The preparation is done, the day finally arrived, and there were smiles plus a few emotional moments. It was Presidential Handover Day at Stokes Bay WI!
Normally the position is for three years but President Angela MacCallum did a magnificent eight years – now the time has come for her to sit and enjoy being a relaxed ordinary member at meetings!
Angela is a retired Headteacher of a large local infant school. Those skills came to the fore with her teaching of crafts from household recycled items. Now we think twice and save everything – who knew what we could make from yoghurt pots and toilet rolls! The displays for our King’s Coronation party received special commendation and the St Mary’s Christmas tree festival always features a Stokes Bay WI fir tree with 100 (to represent our 100 members) decorations crafted by members under her guidance.
We have had fascinating meetings, exciting outings, innovative fundraising, stunning events and amazing quizzes! As leader of our ‘ship’ at Stokes Bay WI, Angela has been a steadying and encouraging point of influence and members were effuse in their praise of her undoubted skills.
It is time to move on, and Tracey Whatley takes over as President now for the next three years. Tracey has shadowed Angela for a year and is ready to move us forward with an interesting programme to come. Stokes Bay WI has just sponsored a beautiful tree at the Parish Centre in Alverstoke in recognition of our meeting place being freshly renovated. A fitting place to pass on the baton to Tracey and for our group to continue to thrive and grow.

International Supper Club
May 2026
For this month’s international supper club we had some wonderful dishes.
Thelma prepared some slimming Italian style stuffed tomatoes with tuna, crème fraiche and spring onion and also some stuffed with cous cous.
She also made some pastrami rolls stuffed with chopped pepper, gherkins and crème fraiche. So that was a high protein, moderately healthy start followed by sheer decadence!
For our next course Darcey prepared an Indian dish of batter dipped paneer bites which were air fried until crispy and served with a curry sauce.
We followed this with Jan’s Italian Chicken Parmesan with a “marry me” sauce. Rich, and very tasty with a healthy serving of steamed curly kale. My dish an Iranian Chicken stew with baby potatoes, dates and walnuts flavoured with ginger, cinnamon and turmeric, served with harissa spiced yoghurt.
Jenny was on dessert this month and she made two wonderful dishes. The first was an Italian caramelised baked apple dish with pistachios which she accompanied with the extremely tasty and totally unpronounceable Icelandic Marens-Kornflexkőkur - light meringue-based chocolate cornflake cookies.
We all said how much we enjoy researching our dishes and coming out from our comfort zone to make dishes we’ve not made before.
Next month we’ve decided to do countries beginning with both J and K.

There’s nothing basic about a Basics Bank!
11th May 2026
At SBWI meetings, members donate 50 pence towards their tea or coffee and biscuits. Because of this, we are able to support local charities and projects – what a useful way to wet your whistle!
We call it the SBWI Community Chest and we discuss with members what we should do with the money raised.
No surprises, in these difficult economic times, they chose our local Basics Bank (at the old railway station in Gosport) as they have a growing need for food and provisions. In the past twelve months, they have helped 3,000 people in our community who don’t have enough money to buy food. The Basics Bank particularly needs tins of meat and vegetables plus washing powder and toiletries at the moment and we were glad to help.
With that in mind, our Vice-President Tracey Whatley and Secretary Sally Rees went shopping with £100 in their pockets. They were even able to shop in bulk to get best value and delivered it all to the Basics Bank PLUS additional items donated monthly at meetings by SBWI members.
Our Community chest has previously supported the Alverstoke Flood Appeal and the D-Day Memorial at Stokes Bay, and last year purchased insulated mugs for parents to use at the Leesland Toddler group in Gosport.

Coffee at a Garden Centre
May 2026 – Poppy’s Tea Room
at Park Place Farm Nursery, Wickham
This is not just a garden centre – it’s a proper nursery with wonderful home-grown plants and knowledgeable experts. Not least they were putting together beautiful planted hanging baskets with eager buyers snapping them up.
What was particularly good this time was the inclusion of two of our newest members. They had an opportunity to mingle with a smaller group (normal meetings could be up to one hundred of us!) so it was much easier for them to chat around the coffee table.
Then there are the cakes – a real speciality at Poppy’s! Always popular is the moist orange cake with cream – thank goodness they hadn’t run out of that particular favourite before we got there!
We had three tables in total and it was lovely, as always, to put the world to rights (if only we could) over delicious teas, coffees and hot chocolate.
As always we are grateful to Joyce for organising us and we enjoyed another happy monthly coffee morning with SBWI.
