Swimming and other watersports aren't the only ways that people get into trouble at the beach.

Getting cut off by the tide also contributes to a significant number of RNLI rescues every year.

https://rnli.org/safety/know-the-risks/tides

Tide times and heights vary daily, and can easily catch you out if you don't check them before heading out. Do your research, know the risks, be prepared.

📟Shout 25 of 2026📟

Portsmouth RNLI's volunteer crew were tasked at 11:11pm on Saturday 6th June to assist a Polish training yacht near the eastern approaches to Portsmouth Harbour after concerns were raised by Portsmouth VTS.

On arrival, the lifeboat crew found the yacht carrying nine people, struggling in heavy seas following engine and navigation equipment problems. The vessel had repeatedly drifted onto the Submarine Barrier and had already made contact with it, placing those onboard at risk.

With the skipper and trainee crew struggling to maintain a safe course, a lifeboat crew member was transferred onto the yacht to provide navigational assistance. The intervention helped restore control of the vessel and prevent further danger.

The yacht was then escorted safely back into harbour and alongside at Haslar Marina.
A great example of teamwork and seamanship from our volunteer crew in challenging conditions.

Fancy spending your summer on the beach? The Royal National Lifeboat Institution (RNLI) is on the lookout for new lifeguards at Southsea, Littlehampton and Bognor Regis beaches and they’re inviting you to give it a go at a taster session this weekend.

On Sunday 31 May, RNLI lifeguards from West Sussex and Hampshire are inviting you to join them in Chichester for a beach lifeguarding taster session. The session will begin at 1400 and will wrap up at around 1530. If you’re interested in becoming a lifeguard at Southsea, Littlehampton or Bognor Regis this summer, this is your chance to see what it’s all about.

A word from Lead Lifeguard Supervisor Sydney Horsted

‘My name is Sydney and I am the Lead Lifeguard Supervisor for West Sussex & Hampshire. We are looking for people in search of a summer job that like the idea of working on the beach, learning lifesaving skills and working as part of a brilliant team of people. We have vacancies on the beaches of Southsea and Littlehampton/Bognor Regis.

To become a beach lifeguard, you need to be 16+ years old and be able to pass our swim tests. You can find out more about the requirements here: RNLI lifeguard requirements and training

To work as an RNLI beach lifeguard, you’ll also need a recognised beach lifeguarding qualification. For those who don’t yet have one, the RNLI is running a full Beach Lifeguard Course from 12-16 June in Chichester. Once qualified, successful applicants will be required to attend an induction between the 4 – 8 July, with patrols starting from the 11 July.

How to sign up

Does this sound like something you’d like to do?

Sign up for the taster session today by following the link here: https://forms.cloud.microsoft/e/pTsgHv12v8

Upon signing up, someone will be in contact regarding the exact location and where to meet.

With the better weather at the moment and, for some, a desire to make changes of lifestyle to feel better or more comfortable this gives an ideal opportunity to help raise funds for the RNLI. Whether you plan to cycle, swim, run, bake, or another personal challenge then sponsorship is a great encouragement to complete the challenge and reach your target. Please be realistic so that you don't suffer injury but with a sponsor form comes support from family, friends and colleagues. As beaches, harbours and inland waterways get busier so do our crews, adding further pressure on the charity's resources. If you involve friends too then it will be more fun and increase fundraising potential. Clubs or groups can enjoy challenging their members and help the RNLI save lives at sea.
Please contact us for a sponsor form.
If this all seems too much effort, feel free to make a donation instead.
THANK YOU

I had the opportunity today to work with Portsmouth lifeboat station on an exercise in Langstone harbour. A great opportunity to see them working together and clearly all the training paid off. Thank you to them for today. The 1st photo was taken on Wednesday evening when they were training alongside a moored vessel.

We had a great time recently with Godalming Brownies teaching them how to throw a line to rescue somebody. The Brownies were working towards completing a challenge. The liferaft was popular as well as other lifesaving equipment being demonstrated. Thank you for a fun evening, your kind donation and support.
