A few years ago, Jude Wilcox, our , reached out to with an idea to see if their students would like some models (our students) to support their learning.
This also would help our pupils find out more about the different industries and job roles available in the real world.
“We were thrilled to welcome these young people to our department,” said Michelle Overthrow, Head of Curriculum for Bridge Training.
“This was a wonderful opportunity for our students to highlight their skills while making a positive impact on the community. It was about more than beauty treatments – it was about creating an inclusive and uplifting experience for everyone involved.”
The collaboration cemented ’s commitment to and , offering its students the chance to develop practical skills while connecting with in meaningful ways.
This joint working experience has become a regular event in the diaries as both education providers really value the incredible impact it has on all our young people.
The pupils benefit from the experience of going out in the community, learning about hair, beauty, photography, art and health and social care job sectors and industries as a hands-on visit.
The pupils are pampered, treated with excellent customer service and get 1:1 time and attention. They use communication and social skills.
They are encouraged to be independent and make choices for themselves; key outcomes for preparation to adulthood.
Many have never been to a professional hair/beauty salon before and lots of new sensory experiences are delivered.
Some of the pupils may have low self-esteem or feel vulnerable but as the day progresses, working relationships are built through the delivery of hair, beauty and art and you can see the transformation in , &
a glowing sense of positive .
The opportunity for all learners to work together who are the same age and support each other is very powerful and emotive for staff involved.
