"Twenty years ago, Scotland made a choice."

On February 25, we hosted the Unfinished Business conference at Glasgow's City Chambers, bringing together 250 professionals and pioneers to celebrate 20 years since the launch of the Scottish Violence Reduction Unit.

Head of the Scottish Violence Reduction Unit, Jimmy Paul, opened the conference with a reflective speech about the SVRU's progress since it launched in 2005 , today's challenges and our mission for the next twenty years.

Two decades ago, Scotland started a journey.

We embraced a radical, hopeful, and necessary truth: violence is preventable, not inevitable.

Last week (25 February), we invited over 250 professionals and pioneers to celebrate our 20th anniversary at the iconic Glasgow City Chambers, at an event titled "Unfinished Business: The Next Twenty"

This was an opportunity to come together, tackle some of today's pressing questions and address how we can create a safer world where our children can thrive 🫱🏻‍🫲🏼

We had some amazing keynote speakers on the day, including Carlene Firmin, Richard V. Reeves & Amrit Kaur Purba who each shared their research and insights into topics such as; contextual safeguarding, the vital role of men and boys and the importance of digital safeguarding 🗣️

CentreStage , a Kilmarnock-based community theatre group, also joined us on the day to deliver a powerful and inspiring performance 🎹

We also want to thank our panellists for providing insightful discussions around the future of violence protection, healthy masculinity and the coalition of the willing. We hope everyone left our event feeling inspired and challenged to continue their important work in violence prevention 🚫

However, our business is unfinished. Let's get to work.

"You can’t create solutions for young people without including them. We live the realities that decisions are being made about. Listening to us isn’t just a nice thing to do – it’s the only way to make things better." Sky from Clued Up Project reflects on taking part in a Youth Opportunity summit in London in July.

In July, the SVRU were invited to attend a Youth Opportunity Summit at St James’s Palace discussing violence impacting young people. The event, hosted by His Majesty the King, brought together youth organisations, frontline workers, the Prime Minister and actor Idris Elba amongst many others.  Ji...
