Tapadh leibh uile! (Thank you all!)

A heartfelt thank you to everyone who attended the 164th Glasgow Islay Association Gathering. It was a wonderful evening celebrating our shared heritage, music, friendship and the strong bonds of our Islay community.

Special thanks to our Chairlady, Mary McGregor, for her leadership, dedication and hard work in bringing the evening together.

We are also deeply grateful to all of the talented artists whose performances made the night so memorable and full of spirit.

A sincere thank you to all the businesses and individuals who generously donated raffle prizes — your kindness and support are greatly appreciated.

Our thanks also go to our Past Presidents and our kindred Associations for their continued friendship and support throughout the years.

Gunna Sound for our ceilidh band, everyone was dancing and celebrating Islay Style!

We look forward to planning for 2027 for the Association turning 165years 🥳🎶 🥃

⭐️ ⭐️

We have had a couple of enquires so I hope this helps:

Q: Is there disabled access/lift to the venue?
A:Yes there is “level” access to the venue (if you go up the “lane” behind the building and in through the double door) there is also a lift available between each floor so if anyone requires this then it’s not a problem.

Q: Can we attend later in the evening for the ceilidh rather than at the start time of 8pm
A: Yes you can attend later 💃

Q:Is it card or cash for tickets?
A: Cash and card payments on the night for tickets, raffles and the bar 🥃

Q: can children attend
A: yes as long as accompanied by an adult.

The final committee member in our meet the committee series is our amazing President, Iona Darroch

Iona is the youngest child of Angus and Irene Darroch, Bowmore and Grandchild of Donald and Margaret (Bunty) Darroch, Bowmore, Islay and James and Helen Sinclair, Furnace Argyll.

Iona attended Bowmore Primary School and Islay High School. She left school and went to work in The Lochside Hotel, where she worked for 13 years before moving to Glasgow.

Iona works in Dentistry and lives in Glasgow with her boyfriend James and her 9 year old son Cameron. Cameron enjoys the Gaelic culture just as much as Iona, he loves to sing/entertain and attends Fèis Phàislig every week and is in the Fèis Phàislig choir.

Iona joined the committee 11 years ago and is now in her 3rd year as President. She hopes the Association will flourish for many years and bring the Ileach connections together at many more events.

The next committee member in the meet the committee series is our Vice President, Fiona Bell

Fiona is the eldest child of the late Alisdair and Christine (McNiven) Bell and granddaughter of the late Iain and Cathie (McPhee) Bell, Port Charlotte and the late Flora McNiven, Bowmore.

Fiona attended Port Charlotte Primary and Islay High School with a short spell at a primary school in Drumchapel, Glasgow also. She currently lives in Fife with her son Alisdair.

It was while at Islay High that her love for the Gaelic language and culture developed. This was when she started competing in the essay competitions and the recitations at Mòd Ìle and finally started entering the solos when she was in her final years of High School. She was privileged in her final year at Islay High School to be awarded the Archibald Sinclair Memorial prize for Gaelic which is sponsored by the Glasgow Islay Association.

Fiona also has a strong interest in Islay History as well as Family History/Genealogy.

Fiona has been on the committee for 4 or 5 years now and is currently in her 3rd year as Vice President. She would love to see the membership and committee grow in order to keep the Glasgow Islay Association alive for many more years and in particular would like to see younger members join the committee as they are the future of our Association.
