Tomorrow (Thursday 18 June) over 200 debt advisers, support workers, policy makers and sector leaders from across the country will come together to strengthen understanding of the complex impact of economic abuse and coercive control across the debt advice sector.
The Responding to Economic Abuse: A National Debt & Money Advice Conference, delivered by Money Advice Scotland and Financially Included, is the first of its kind to be held in Scotland.
Janine Rennie, Chief Executive of Money Advice Scotland, said, “One of our key roles at Money Advice Scotland is to provide training and events for the money advice sector and I’m delighted that, alongside Financially Included, we are hosting our first conference on economic abuse. It is often advice and support workers who first spot the signs of coerced debt and restricted access to money among their clients, and one of the aims of this event is to support them in identifying and effectively responding to this complex and traumatic experience.
“This conference will explore the intersections between economic abuse, problem debt, poverty and financial exclusion and the role of policy in supporting stronger protections and better outcomes. We are also looking to strengthen partnership working and I’m pleased so many of our partners are attending and sharing their expert insight through the presentations, discussions and workshops planned.
“I am really looking forward to this valuable opportunity for everyone in the sector to connect, share practice and strengthen our collective efforts to address this growing form of domestic abuse.”

It’s two weeks until our joint conference with Financially Included on the growing and complex impact of economic abuse and coercive control across the debt advice sector.

The ‘Responding to Economic Abuse: A National Money and Debt Advice Conference’ has a packed agenda which aims to
- Build understanding and confidence in recognizing and responding to economic abuse
- Explore the intersections between economic abuse, problem debt, poverty and financial exclusion
- Share lived experience alongside expert insight and practical learning

Money and debt advisers routinely need to contact creditors and service providers on behalf of clients to resolve errors or disputes, arrange repayment plans or prevent enforcement action, but they often face significant barriers to effective communication.
Long telephone waiting times, the lack of specialist adviser routes and inconsistent recognition of third-party authority, result in advisers spending excessive time attempting to make contact rather than supporting clients.
Dedicated Adviser-Only Helplines are a proven solution, and there are benefits to creditors too!
- Fewer repeat calls = more efficient use of staff time
- Realistic repayment plans can be agreed sooner, resulting in better outcomes
- Supports consumer duty, aligning with fair treatment vulnerability & guidelines.
It’s a smarter way to work.
