Online Girls' Brigade group for young people from military families!

The Girls’ Brigade is launching an online group specifically for young people from military families, providing a welcoming space to connect, share experiences and make new friends.

The first session takes place on Thursday 15 October, from 7:00–8:30pm, online via Zoom.

The sessions are free to join and will include Bible-themed activities, crafts and group discussions. Young people are welcome whether they are already part of Girls’ Brigade or completely new.

If you work with military families or know a young person who might be interested, please help spread the word.

Congratulations, Amanda! 🎉

A huge congratulations to Amanda Aikman on successfully completing the Edinburgh Kiltwalk on Sunday 13 September, covering an impressive 4.6 miles.

The distance was considerably further than Amanda had walked for some time, making her achievement even more impressive.

Even more importantly, Amanda raised £150 for SSAFA Forth Valley, providing a very welcome boost to Branch funds.

Thank you, Amanda, for your commitment, determination and generosity. Your achievement is a great example for us all to follow.

October is Free Wills Month and through SSAFA's Free Wills Services, you can write or update a simple Will online, over the phone or by visiting a solicitor.

Having a Will in place helps ensure your wishes are respected and that the people and causes you care about are remembered in the way you choose.

Many people who use these services choose to leave a gift to SSAFA, but there is no obligation to do so. Any gift, large or small, can help SSAFA support the Armed Forces community.

We're so proud of our volunteers, many of whom have been making a difference in the Armed Forces community for a number of years - sometimes decades!

We'd like to wish Scotland volunteer Charles Scott, pictured centre left with fellow SSAFA Glasgow and Renfrewshire Branch volunteers, a huge well done and thank you for 50 years of voluntary service to SSAFA, the Armed Forces charity.

Like many of our volunteers Charles has a personal connection to the Armed Forces community, having served for more than 20 years in the Army Reserves in addition to his long professional civilian career.
We're always keen to welcome new volunteers and supporters to the family.

Does your GP know you're a veteran? Say You Served this September.

According to Scotland's 2022 census, there are 172,000 veterans living in Scotland - but only 13,000 are currently identified as veterans on GP IT systems.

We're calling on veterans in Scotland to help change that. Doing so can help veterans access - and GPs signpost - veteran-specific support where appropriate.
Next time you're at your GP surgery, let reception know you're a veteran if you feel comfortable doing so.

In 2025, SAFA's dedicated teams of volunteers and employees supported more than 12,000 individuals through its casework service alone. With over £8M pledged in financial assistance, our teams saw a trend emerging, with more beneficiaries needing support with household goods than anything else. This was closely followed by those needing mobility support and housing assistance.

Here at SSAFA, we understand that starting again after instability or homelessness means moving into a property, without basic household items many take for granted. Essentials like kettles. carpets, bedding and washing machines can be life changing for those facing housing insecurity.

Whether securing funding for a deposit, paying bus fare to collect keys, or securing funding for those items that make a house a home, SAFA caseworkers are there to help, while community engagement volunteers ensure those in need know where to turn.
