It Also Gives People A Chance To See How Much Money We Are Raising And Also The Ways In Which We Raise This Money. As most of you will know by now this page has been set up in memory of a beautiful little boy who passed away on the 3rd of october 2010. Below you will find a very brief story of Kayden's life which we would be very grateful if you could take the time to read it.
n on the 8th of July 2008 at 00.41am weighting 8lbs 1oz. He loved his food, always smiling, he slept well and hardly cried. However as the months went on it became clear that there was something that wasn't right with his health, he had started to cry all day and hardly ever slept at night anymore. This was passed off as him being just simply a different baby to what his older brother had been, people kept telling me that you never get two the same. But as he got older we noticed alot of different things with him like his hand was turned in the way, He didnt talk well for his age, his walking seemed really unsteady and he would fall over all the time. He went through days were he was stuck leaning on the one side and u couldn't bend him, other days he could not even get himself off the floor let alone walk. He would bang his head on anything and everything. he would hit himself all the time and even going as far as to bite himself till his wee hands were bleeding. I lost count of the number of times I took him to the doctors, there appeared to be nothing wrong with him and he seemed healthy and happy they would always say. However all this was about to change and take a turn that even thought i knew he was ill i never expected. On February 2010 Kayden took his first case of low blood sugars which kept him in hospital for over 1 week, however by now the doctors in the RAH agreed with me that there was something wrong with Kayden and he should now be referred to the Royal Hospital for Sick Children in Glasgow . He underwent every test they could think of and all the results came back clear. He ended up in hospital every 6 weeks with low blood sugars so Yorkhill decided to repeat all his tests again and this time added in a skin and muscle biopsy as well as another lumbar puncture. This was the secong time i had let my son go through all these painful tests and having to watch him lie there and have needles put into his tiny body was so awful but i knew this was the only way to us ever getting to the bottom of what could really be wrong with him as still no one had any idea. Kayden passed away in the RAH on the 3rd of October 2010 at 5.17am, 5 days after these tests were done. It looked like my baby boy decided he had suffered enough and he choose to leave us known we would fight to find out what this illness was and why he had to have it. After kayden passed away I found through the doctors in yorkhill hospital that Kayden was suffering from an illness known as Cerebral Hepatic Mitochondrial Disorder. What is Mitochondrial Disease? In every cell in the body, Mitochondria are responsible for producing energy (called ATP) that the cell needs to function. Cells make up tissues and organs in our bodies, for example the heart and liver. They are like power stations in our bodies, supplying the energy every cell needs to function. If our cells do not have energy, then the tissues or body organs that the cells are made up of do not work properly,
It would be the same if power stations do not produce enough energy for the country there will be areas of blackout, where parts of the country cannot function. There is a huge variety and severity of Mitochondrial Disease. It depends on how many cells are affected, and where they are in the body. Each cell has mitochondria in it to supply energy. The number of mitochondria in each cell can vary between one and hundreds, depending on how much energy that cell needs. A busy cell such as a brain or liver cell needs a lot of energy to function properly therefore has a lot of mitochondria
Every person with Mitochondrial Disease is affected differently. Each individual affected will have a different combination of Mitochondria that are working and not working within each cell
Mitochondrial disease is very rare. Symptoms can begin at any age. It can take a long time to get a diagnosis because a variety of different body systems are usually affected, in a way that is not linked. One of the characteristics of Mitochondrial disease is that it involves seemingly unrelated body organs. If lots of Mitochondria in the body are affected in the body organs, like the brain, Mitochondrial disease can be very serious. (This was the case for kayden has the cells that were most affected in his body seems to be his brain)
Symptoms of the disease are usually progressive in body systems where the cells have a high demand for energy, such as brain cells. MITOCHONDRIAL DISORDER IS UNTREATABLE AND UNCURABLE.
