Outsourced workers to strike at TransPennine

Rail union RMT said that outsourced cleaners and catering workers at TransPennine Express (TPE) will take 48-hour strike action against low pay from tomorrow (Friday, July 31).

Catering workers at Rail Gourmet and cleaners at Bidvest Noonan will take action as the company has yet to even make a pay offer even though the anniversary date was back in April.

RMT general secretary Eddie Dempsey said that low pay was how outsourcing giants made money out of the rail network and called on the government to act.

“Companies like Rail Gourmet and Bidvest Noonan hide behind the fact that TPE won’t take responsibility for low pay on their contracts.

“The government needs to act to end the scourge of low pay for outsourced workers and bring them in-house where they belong,” he said.

RMT backs cross-industry call for domestic North Sea energy production

Offshore union, RMT has joined businesses, trade unions, and industry organisations in signing an open letter calling on the government to support continued domestic oil and gas production alongside the expansion of renewable energy.

The letter argues that energy security, industrial resilience and a fair transition for workers depend on maintaining UK production while accelerating investment in offshore wind, carbon capture, hydrogen and other low-carbon industries.

RMT General Secretary Eddie Dempsey said: "Our offshore members are clear that new oil and gas sources need to be drilled and activated, alongside the progress we have made with the government on transition training, jobs plans and the Fair Work Charter in the offshore wind sector.

"Increasing domestic production of oil and gas must also be accompanied by a condition of domestic use, to reduce reliance on the doubly polluting effects of imports.

"Alongside ramping up supply chain jobs in clean electricity production, decommissioning and grid connections, we would improve the stability of offshore workers' income, skills and career prospects."

The open letter also argues that an all-energy approach is essential to protecting jobs, strengthening energy security and delivering a just transition for offshore workers while reducing dependence on imported oil and gas.
