RMT PAYS TRIBUTE TO MERCHANT NAVY SEAFARERS

Seafarers union, RMT today paid tribute to the historic contribution of merchant navy Ratings to the economy, security and maritime traditions of all nations in the UK on Merchant Navy Day.

RMT General Secretary, Eddie Dempsey said: “It is a huge privilege to lead the trade union that represents merchant navy seafarers at work today around our coast and in international waters.

“This Merchant Navy Day, it is right that we pause to remember the thousands of seafarers who gave their lives to protect and preserve these islands throughout our history.

“As our nation faces new and ever more challenging threats to our national security RMT will be paying tribute to those who have gone before them, whilst continuing to campaign for seafarers to ensure that as an island nation we are maintaining and growing the maritime jobs and skills required around our coast.”

Outsourced workers to strike at TransPennine

Outsourced cleaners and catering workers at TransPennine Express (TPE) will take 24-hour strike action tomorrow (Friday August 28) against low pay with picket lines across the country.

Catering workers at Rail Gourmet and cleaners at Bidvest Noonan have already taken action after the company failed to make an acceptable pay offer even though the anniversary date was back in April.

RMT general secretary Eddie Dempsey said that low pay was how outsourcing giants made money out of the rail network and called on the government to act.

“Greedy companies like Rail Gourmet and Bidvest Noonan hide behind the fact that TPE won’t take responsibility for low pay on their contracts.

“The government needs to act to end the scourge of low pay for outsourced workers and bring them in-house where they belong,” he said.

Rail Gourmet pickets have been organised in the following locations:
• Carlisle Station 11:00hrs to 13:00hrs
• Newcastle Central 10:00hrs to 12:00hrs
• Edinburgh Waverley 11:00hrs to 14:00hrs
• Glasgow Central 11:00hrs to 13:00hrs
• Liverpool Lime St 10:00hrs to 13:00hrs
• Manchester Piccadilly 09:00hrs to 11:00hrs
• York 09:00hrs to 12:00hrs

Bidvest Noonan pickets have been organised in the following locations:
• Manchester Piccadilly 09:00hrs to 11:00hrs
• Liverpool Lime St 10:00hrs to 13:00hrs
• Middlesborough 09:00hrs to 12:00hrs
• Newcastle Central 10:00hrs to 12:00hrs
• Huddersfield 08:00hrs to 11:00hrs

Rail union RMT said that outsourced cleaners and catering workers at TransPennine Express (TPE) will take 48-hour strike action against low pay from tomorrow (Friday, July 31).

Catering workers at Rail Gourmet and cleaners at Bidvest Noonan will take action as the company has yet to even make a pay offer even though the anniversary date was back in April.
