A couple of weeks ago, we partnered with Kinning Park Complex to put on a special screening of the documentary Caroline Walker: Women’s Work, directed by Nicola Black & we had an INCREDIBLE time!

We were lucky enough to have Nicola come along to the screening & answer some of our questions afterward.

We took our Suffragette Stall & badge-maker, where we got to create special, Kinning Park Complex themed badges that celebrated the 30th Anniversary of their Community Sit-in. The sit-in in 1996 saw a group of young women and mothers stand up and demand the centre be put into community hands, when it was faced with closure by the council. They occupied the building 24/7 for 55 days straight, leading to a victorious community buyout.

A big thank you to Kinning Park Complex , Nicola & everyone who came along to the screening. If you missed out on this one, never fear! We’ve got plenty of events coming up in June- keep your eyes peeled for more details! 👀

🚀 We'd like to introduce Laura who is leading our Business Development!

Thanks to our Build It Funding from Firstport , we have been working with Laura Brown to develop our income generation strategies.

Laura has held several senior leadership roles in audience and income development within the arts and museums sector, social enterprise, and the third sector.

Laura recently launched Impact Catalyst Partners where she and her co-founders work with various third sector and arts organisations to develop their income and communication strategies. Laura said, 'I was really interested to work with Protests and Suffragettes as it was obvious that their artistic offer, their method of working alongside communities, and their artworks were clearly a scalable proposition. I like the fact that they do not shy away from the history of women's protest and how relevant that issue remains today. Having started my career in the arts, it's wonderful to be involved with an organisation which has so much artistic integrity and passion. I'm really looking forward to learning more about the fearless women of Scotland who came before us and how their protest and suffering helped shape modern society.'

This Saturday 30th, from 10-11am, we go live on our Patreon with our very first Special Guest Ren Clark! Ren is the Events and Volunteer Coordinator for Kinning Park Complex ex & they'll be talking about KPC's present, as well as its history, and the current Anniversary Celebrations they've been involved in organising.

"We have to try and change things, and we have to do it... from a grass roots level."

We’ll also be sharing from our oral history interview of Helen Kyle, one of the activists involved in the Sit-In. Helen's background was in community development and she knew how to organise, so when the Town Council announced the building would be shut and would no longer be a community centre, she sprang into action 🗣️

Our very first (temporary) mural! ⭐

Today we’re thinking alllll the way back to 4 years ago in 2022 when we were installing our first temporary mural as part of a commission from SWG3 Yardworks Grid. This mural celebrated Suffrage activists Louisa Lumsden and Helen Fraser you campaigned in Anderston and Glasgow!

We had an incredible time transforming this drum-site into a vibrant celebration of Glasgow Women’s Histories & we’ve been super lucky to go on to create several permanent murals in Govan & Anderston since then.

As part of our vision for 2028, we want there to be more public murals/street artworks celebrating Scottish Suffragettes/Changemakers, and all the incredible work they achieved throughout their lives.

A few weeks ago, we were lucky enough to attend the Yardworks Festival at SWG3. This year marked 10 incredible years of YardWorks & the festival’s creativity and community could be felt throughout the whole weekend.

P&S took our Pop-Up Shop to the market vendors section of the festival and had an incredible time chatting with folks about suffrage herstories & how we can celebrate them with public art, workshops and education packs.

Massive thanks to Yardworks for having us — we were delighted to be a part of this year’s festival and can’t wait to see what the next 10 years of YardWorks brings to Glasgow.

🚀 Patreon Gathering on 30 May 10-11am 🚀

Join us as we explore the history of the 1996 Kinning Park Complex Community Sit-In. We'll share historical images of KPC when it was a school, and from the Sit-In when a group of local women and young families demanded that the building should stay open – and be given to the community.

🗣 We have an oral history interview from Helen Kyle, one of the activists involved in the Sit-In. Helen's background was in community development and she knew how to organise, so when the Town Council announced the building would be shut and would no longer be a community centre, she sprang into action. She talked to single mothers who relied on the after school club, and the people who attended classes at KPC, and invited them to meetings. The day before the building was to be locked, they organised a rota and people did 8 hour shifts throughout the day. The sit-in lasted for 55 days, and the building has been in community hands ever since!

🙌 We'll also be hearing from a special guest, Ren Clark, KPC's Events and Volunteer Coordinator. They'll be talking about KPC's present, as well as its history, and the current Anniversary Celebrations they've been involved in organising.

CALLING ALL SCHOOLS!
INTERESTED IN GLASGOW'S HISTORY AND TRADITIONAL SKILLS?

As part of WestFest, come along to Cottiers for a day filled with history, heritage and traditional skills. Outside, you will have the opportunity to get some hands-on experience with slating with the Scottish Traditional Skills Forum and demonstrations in sign writing and stone carving by Glasgow City College.

The theatre will be filled with a range of stalls hosted by heritage and history organisations for visitors to seek advice, to delve into Glasgow’s history and learn about how to become involved in Scotland’s heritage.

We will also be hosting a tour of the building during the day at 1.30pm. For the tour please meet at the Cottiers bar.

This is a FREE event designed to spark interest in Glasgow's history, buildings and traditional skills. Some stalls will also be available to offer career advice for those wishing to get into heritage, history, traditional skills or related careers.

Stalls include:
Glasgow City Heritage Trust is an independent charity that provides advice, funding and resources to help owners and communities look after the city’s historic buildings. Come along to our stall to explore how we support careers in traditional skills, or get practical advice on caring for tenements. We’d love to chat and share what we do!

Glasgow Zine Library is a community art space based in Govanhill that celebrates the culture of radical self-publishing through the medium of zines. At our archive, visitors can learn about zines as historical documents of community action, and movement building. Through our programme of events and outreach, we promote a growing contemporary zine culture throughout Scotland, teaching people about the power of DIY art.

GZL will have a pop-up selection from its vast archive of over 4000 zines for you to browse, as well as materials to have a go at making your own zine!'

⭐️ Herstory Highlights:
📣 Dr Sarah Parker Remond was a lecturer, doctor, activist & campaigner from the US, born in 1826.

She fought for education which led her to become a lecturer & a doctor – an incredible achievement considering the challenges she faced in the early 1800s.

🗣Her lived experience as an activist & woman of colour gave her great insight, which she brought to the UK. She helped organise campaigns across Scotland, England, and Ireland against slavery, & she spoke out for women’s rights – packing out venues in Scotland.

Dr Sarah Remond Parker is 1 of over 40 women activists featured in our Scotland’s Suffragette Playing cards. The cards feature activists who campaigned from around the world for and for all ✊
