“Proposed Closure BBC Scotland Costume & Prop Store”

Cairn is very concerned about the proposed closure of the BBC Scotland Costume & Prop Store in Dumbarton due to the sale of the BBC Dumbarton Studio Complex earlier this year. At a time when more filming is taking place in Scotland we cannot lose this vital resource. This short-sighted decision is most certainly not in line with the BBC’s pledge of continued investment in Scotland and would most definitely impact on our members & our industry in general. Cairn urges the BBC to pause and consider the optics & the options. Find the Costume & Props Store a new home. It was housed in North Glasgow for 25 years before a move to Dumbarton in 2016. Investment not erosion. Our industry must thrive, not merely struggle to survive. There is an open letter to the BBC already signed by industry and non-industry people who understand the significance of this asset and why it should not be closed. Please show your support by signing. Stand together.

Huge congratulations to the staff & students of New CLan Arts on two brilliant showcases yesterday at Impact Arts. Both BA Acting & BA Musical Theatre knocked it out of the park. We were so proud to support our young members & it was great to see so many industry colleagues in the audience.

UPDATE ON SCOTRAIL USE OF AI VOICE
ScotRail are determinedly moving forward with an AI voice for in-train announcements but only on their new trains. On all of the existing stock the in-train voice will still be that of our member who has been the warm, friendly, human voice of ScotRail trains for over two decades. We know AI technologies are here to stay however we see this is a positive outcome while we continue to fight for legislation & protections on their uses within our industry. This is a small but significant victory & testament to what we can achieve when we stand together. We, the members of Cairn, raised our voices to the point where they could not be ignored. May we always raise our voices together for the greater good.

Early this morning Cairn heard the sad news that our friend & comrade Clunie Mackenzie had taken her final bow. Clunie was a fine actor, writer and director. She was also an intelligent and passionate activist for the Arts and artists who many of us served alongside. Another guid sister gone. Our thoughts are with her family and all those who loved her.
