We are taking a break

Hello! After two years of running Govanhill Community Markets, our team decided to take a yearlong break. Huge thank you to everyone who joined us for the first market, Street Feast, Food Stories and Harvest Fair editions, all workshops leaders, market stallholders, community meals and open mics participants, volunteers, our partners, collaborators and funders.

Here is a very condensed reflection of what we did together with Govanhill community:
🎪 4 markets with 1700+ attendees overall
🍭 43 market stalls
🎺 Free programme: 13 workshops, 2 community meals, 2 open mics and 3 special music and dance performances
🎥 2 movie screenings in collaboration with GAMIS
📙 1 community recipes zine in collaboration with Glasgow Zine Library

It was such a beautiful journey and we are looking forward to bringing more street celebrations to Govanhill after our break.

Meanwhile, stay tuned as we are hoping to bring different kind of events later in the year.

Govanhill Food Stories Community Zine is available online!

At the Govanhill Community Market in August as part of Govanhill International Festival and Carnival and the , Govanhill residents shared stories, drawings, favourite dishes and beloved recipes at the pop-up exhibition. With the help of Glasgow Zine Library and editor Polly Rappaport we collated all of them in a beautiful zine, which can now be accessed online on the Govanhill Open Museum website!

Thank you to all the zine contributions, market participants, project partners and funders who made this possible! Special thanks to Glasgow Zine Library and Polly Rappaport for putting the zine together and Marzanna from Govanhill Open Museum!

Thank you everyone who joined us for the Harvest Fair last weekend as part of the The Climate Fringe Festival. What a great ending of the markets season!

Big thank you to everyone who brought dishes to the community meal, everything was so delicious! Food not Bombs Glasgow and Two Eight Seven bakery provided free soup and organic bread – absolute legends!
It was great to learn how to make a sauerkraut with Foragerium, buy second hand clothes, pastries from, handmade gifts and herbal remedies, try Mediterranean dishes, experiment with natural textile dyeing with Lily and India, grab a copy of Greater Govanhill CIC magazine and Govanhill Food Stories zine, learn how to make nettle cordage and get a face paint with Indre Simkute, learn more about activities happening in the area with South Seeds, plant your own little flower bed with People’s Pantry gardening group and perform and listen to some tunes and spoken word!

And what an epic ending of the day with everyone on stage! Ania and Barry, thank you for being such fantastic open mic hosts and Music Broth for providing music instruments.
