The following text is an extract from the Commonwealth War Graves Commission website page for the memorial: https://www.cwgc.org/visit-us/find-cemeteries-memorials/cemetery-details/74638/inchnadamph-old-churchyard

“Three miles from the nearest road and more than two thousand feet above the nearest village, lies the isolated war grave of six airmen. They are buried on a rocky plateau near the summit of Ben More Assynt, 20 miles northeast of Ullapool. All of them died in April 1941 after their plane crashed. When their bodies were later found by a local shepherd, he buried them together using parts of their destroyed plane for a makeshift cross. By 1944 the Commission had arranged for a temporary war memorial cairn to be erected above the graves . . . To give families somewhere to mourn, a special war memorial was placed by the Commission in the nearest village of Inchnadamph. A slowly growing pile of stones, added to by the odd passing walker, was all that remained up on the high mountain slopes. And that would have been where the story ended. Until 2010, when a local mountain guide approached us. He had heard concerns the exact location of the crash site could get lost to time. And so, with the help of the MOD, [in 2013] a 600kg special CWGC granite marker was lowered into place by helicopter – possibly the most remote war grave in all of the UK.”

We send our warmest congratulations to Major Alisdair Miller, who has been awarded an MBE in the in recognition of his services to the community in Sutherland.

Golspie man Alisdair's voluntary work for SSAFA, the Armed Forces charity is exceptional and probably occupies at least one or two working days every week. As well as his fundraising, he is a caseworker for SSAFA. On average, a case might take a day a week for one or two months.

In August 2024 he was awarded a "Long Service Award" for ten years’ service to SSAFA. In his work with SSAFA, he has not only secured financial support for many clients, but he has also kept the SSAFA Sutherland Branch running smoothly in his role as its Secretary.

In addition, he has been a passionate fundraiser for many other causes and over many years.

Alisdair served 37 years in the Queens Own Highlanders and Small Arms School Corps, leaving in the rank of major. He moved back to Sutherland in 2008, immediately after the end of his Army service.

SSAFA Sutherland chairman William Sutherland said: "Alisdair Miller is a stalwart of SSAFA here in Sutherland. Many ex-service veterans and their families have benefited from his conscientious, compassionate work in helping get them the support they need, when they need it."
