🎖️ Meet the first Royal Engineer to receive the Victoria Cross 🎖️

Lieutenant‑General Sir Wilbraham Oates Lennox VC KCB was just 24 years old when he earned Britain’s highest award for gallantry during the Siege of Sevastopol in the Crimean War.

A young officer in the Corps of Royal Engineers, Lennox was recognised for his “cool and gallant conduct” while establishing a forward position under heavy enemy fire—an action so bold it prompted a special order from General Canrobert himself.

His bravery earned him not only the Victoria Cross, but international recognition, including the Ottoman Order of the Medjidieh and the Sardinian Medal of Military Valour.

Lennox went on to serve with distinction across the globe—from the Indian Mutiny to Egypt, Ceylon, and beyond—finishing a remarkable career as a Knight Commander of the Order of the Bath.

👉 You can discover Lennox’s VC story, along with 24 other Victoria Cross awards, at the Royal Engineers Museum in Gillingham, Kent.
